The summer ratings are out. There are no numbers for the Cumulus stations. It's not a lie to say that Arbitron shows WJXB as #1 in Knoxville right now.

It's interesting to see how things look when, out of 100 available share points, only 42.4 are showing. Even allowing for 20 or so for Cumulus, that still leaves lots of audience for the independent guys. Ya feelin' me Johnny? Yo, Ronnie M! And a Ouija Board shout out to J. Bazzell!!!

No reason to panic, TC. The Summer Book is "subscriber only," which, as all astute broadcast professionals know, is why only Journal and South Central stations are listed. This renders the Summer Arbitron useless, with Cumulus not being a Summer subscriber.

Acquaintances in other markets say Cumulus prefers Neilsen, but that company does not measure Knoxville, unless Cumulus has enough sway over them to bring them in (which could possibly threaten Arbitron's future in this market.)

Neilsen doesn't measure any other markets either. Having some small Cumulus markets once a year wasn't profitable.

They have to have Arbitron in the major markets of which they now have several. Count on Arbitron holding a gun to their throat to get them back as full subscribers in all their markets.

Right, Super Q. It is extremely doubtful that the merger of Cumulus and Citadel will create enough subscribers to entice Neilsen to get back into the radio ratings business. If Neilsen stays out, and they probably will, we will soon have 3 subscribers for all 4 Knoxville books, and we kibitzers will have free ratings info to kibitz over.

It's apparent from what's leaking out of Old Kingston Pike that the new company has its way of doing things, and isn't highly concerned or influenced by differing opinions.

if what I heard was correct, those in charge of the late J Bazzell's station are running infomercials on some weeknights now. Yes, infomercials, not preachers.

There's also advertising there that doesn't appear anywhere else except over the transom to a station with numbers. With Cumulus skipping the summer book, there's no reason for WNOX, Praise, Merle, or the rest of the indies to spend the money. And Cumulus is a machine that's going to keep doing its thing regardless of numbers or what anyone else thinks.
