Where's Woody Woodpecker?

Can someone please explain the current absence of Woody Woodpecker and the Walter Lantz crew from the OTA/cable universe?

Also, I invite someone to tell the syndication history of the Lantz cartoons, as has already been done on R-I regarding the Flintstones and the Warners 'toons.

My favorite Woody toon, which dates from the days before Grace Lantz took over the voice, when Wally Walrus straps the woodpecker into his Tit-a-tat machine to torment him with the same noises Woody has been plaguing Wally with during the entire short (including pushing a push mower while singing opera), preventing Wally from taking his afternoon nap.

> The last time I have seen Woody Woodpecker(the older cartoons) on TV was back in about 1995 or so and then Woody Woodpecker was seen no more except for FOX's revival of new Woody cartoons in 2000. I don't know why Boomerang or The Cartoon Network has not picked up the Woody Woodpecker cartoons.

In syndication, from about the mid 70's,Woody Woodpecker was either in tandem with Bugs Bunny(40's Warner Bros.),The Three Stooges,The Little Rascals,or Tom and Jerry under various local and syndication titles: Woody and The Rascals,Woody and The Stooges,Woody Woodpecker and Friends, etc. In 1986,the cartoons came back to TV on the USA Network under the title The Woody Woodpecker Show where it lasted until 1990. It was also seen on FOX stations mainly from 1990 to 1995.

Basically, there is possibly something preventing the Woody Woodpecker cartoons from being shown again. More than likely since Universal has now been taken over by NBC or the deaths of Walter Lantz and Grace Stafford Lantz.

I don't think Woody Woodpecker has the widespread popularity like the Warner Brothers characters do. New Woody cartoons came out in the late 90s and the older toons were on Cartoon Network ultra briefly during that re-launch. But it never caught on. And that's probably why Woody toons aren't aired these days. Well, that and NBC.

I used to watch Woody Woodpecker religiously when it was in syndication on WNEW channel 5 in New York from the late 70s to the mid 80s since they showed the older, violent ones. Sadly Woody, like virtually every cartoon character from his era, underwent a moral cleansing and became too cutesy for my tastes.

My favorite? Probably the one where Woody wanted to take a bath and destroyed the house getting his dime back. For years, when a dime is mentioned in conversation, I always say, "You know, Woody Woodpecker once blew up a house for a dime."

I have many favorite Woody Woodpecker cartoons. The one I remember the most is the one where Woody flies to Switzerland and he tries to get some rest and of all places:A clock tower. When the clock struck on the hour,it woke up Woody up big time.So Woody decides to throw a wrench literally into the clock. Meanwhile, the clock maker who also was supervisor of the clock tower saw what was going on,he decides to throw Woody out,and in one scene the clock maker gets in front of the clock chimers and each one clonks him on the head with Woody messing with clock. Finally, when Woody decided he had enough of the clock,he unravels the clock into pieces and springs and all chase the clock maker down the stairs and down the valley.

I remember in the early 1990s watching "The Bugs and Woody Show" on TV-38 out of Boston. At that time they also showd Popeye and Tom & Jerry. One of them I think it was Popeye would have the TV 38 Logo Dancing when they'd go to a commercial break.<P ID="signature">______________

I do miss Woody Woodpecker cartoons also. I saw the Fox Kids revival with Billy West as the voice of Woody, and it paled in comparision to the original shorts. Hopefully some network like Boomerang or even Toon Disney (they do feature cartoons outside of the Disney library) can one day bring these back to TV.

Didn't WSBK also have Garfield cartoons on weekday mornings?
