Where's WSAI?

just checked the "trends":
http://www.radio-info.com/content/arbitron.php?market=028

once again, 1360 didn't even register -- what gives??

other observations:

WCVG got a 0.7, could it go higher? what would WMOH do if it went spanish?

supertalk slipped further - but so did 1530 Homer

the Wiz dropped back

will the machine that is WLW ever drop from #1?

smooth Jazz made a big difference for WCIN, now if they could improve their signal...

my beloved WDJO needs MUCH more promotion - a few (and tiny!) billboards doesn't say much for their promotions budget. this was the summer book, fer cryin' out loud, one could actually hear them over the air for a while! i think, with WGRR's move (which appears to be working) there is a segment looking for "real" oldies. i'd like to see a tv/print/bus/BIG LED billboard campaign: "Looking for Elvis/Frankie/Bobby? Turn to 1160!"

Do you have about $50,000 to $100,000 grand? If you do, give it to Dusty, because that's about the kind of money you're talking about. Most powerhouse stations these days don't have that kind of marketing budget.

AM radio (heck, all radio soon) is an entry point to the internet. If WDJO concentrates on developing the internet portal, it will do much better. Otherwise, they need to move the studio to Florence, y'all, and be a NKY station...where it can be heard 24/7.

As for WSAI...it is quite sad to see the mighty 1360 operating with no ground system (I used to listen to Stagg at night in Dayton...that wouldn't happen now), and no reason to tune in. Geez, CCU...at least sell it to somebody who will if you ain't gonna use it. Maybe Dusty and company can buy it and simulcast WDJO on it.

Is WSAI's signal really that bad now. I never listen to them. I aways thought CC had such a good engineering staff.

It is (the signal has degraded significantly), and they do (have good engineers). But copper costs money, something CCU has been loath to spend on anything but their big guns. The greatest engineers in the world can't buld a good ground system without copper wire.

will the machine that is WLW ever drop from #1?

yeah, probably. it is only there now by default.

Probably not in the near future. It's talk and it skews older, so it will be able to maintain its share vs. the younger-skewing music stations, who are getting undermined by online and iPod listening.

The share for the older talk stations should remain steady. They are not impacted by new media as much as the other stations. I don't see them falling out anytime soon, if at all.

10 yrs from now AM will be dead and the talk stations will be on FM. Until then, I think WLW remain #1 by default even if they were running dead air.

Regarding the poor ground system of radials for WSAI, the solution is simple.

As manager of KMVI am & FM maui Hawaii,(1980s) I pumped sea water onto the ground radials once a month and the signal doubled it's coverage. No ocean near Cincinnati you say ? Use regular water with road salt.
The bad news is eventually all that salt will corrode the radials.

Bottom line;

WSAI will never capture it's popularity of the 60s.

Nick

I don't beleive the EPA would allow that. At least the federal EPA, Ohio EPA probably wouldn't have a problem with it as long as you mixed in some ground up lead painted Chinese toys that have been recalled.
