whfm fire

If my memory recollects sometime in the mid 70"s I remember somthing about a fire at the whfm(fm 99) transmitter. I was maybe sixteen or seventeen at the time. Does anyone remember that, I think they were off the air for just a little time. If my memory is right what caused it and where was the transmitter and tower at the time. If I'm wrong then it must of been a dream or something

I don't remember the exact year, but around 1978 the WHFM transmitter did indeed catch on fire, destroying itself and the aluminum transmitter shack at the base of the WHAM tower in Chili. Not sure of the cause, but I would assume the power supply was the culprit.

Fortunately, the company had just taken delivery of a new FM transmitter for another station in Allentown PA. No time was wasted in transporting that unit to Rochester and installing it in a new transmitter enclosure. I believe the total time off the air was about one week.

I recall that there might have been vandalism involved where someone put a couple of slugs into the transmission line. That took them off the air for quite some time.
