WHGG illegally broadcast on 1090am last night

At midnight I was getting a strong signal on 1090 am thought it was KAAY then the announcer said joy 100.3 fm. The signal was probably on day power not critical hours power. Guess they forget to switch the signal off. KAAY and WBAL fight out in Danville at night with weak signals.

May not have been illegal, may have been a test. Whatever audio was used (if no commercials were aired) is immaterial.

Which Danville are you in? 10kw ND from the the far northeast corner of Tennessee would likely put an impressive night signal into Danville, Virginia, Danville, Illinois, and possibly also Danville, Iowa.

After midnight, AM stations may run "experimental" mode...full power and no directional but NO commercials...however, its limited and cannot be done on a regular basis..

It was at the top of the hour and it was sounded like 10000 watts. Should have continued to listen to see if it had switched to critical hours pattern. A test I presume. Btw I am in danville va and east tn is prime area for nighttime dxing.

Not meaning to nitpick here,

Well allright. So I'll nitpick.

Couldn't that mention of 100.3 FM be conscrewed as an advertisement ? Even if it * is * for the insular station company itself? You would be using one entity to promote the other.

If it were a test, and a sole gauge of how far the AM signal got out, that meant someone would be at the separate AM transmitter site ; that the two stations most likely would have the capability to split programming, no?
The capacity to ID separately ?
