WHHZ

WHHZ (100.5 THE BUZZ) has already been moved once and re-licensed as a C2 in Trenton running 44KW at 469 Feet.

I think I know the answer to this-- but I'll pose the question anyway.

Could WHHZ apply for a power/height increase from their current location (and thus a different class) or could they perhaps move in even further, say to the 1,000 stick in Newberry and run 20KW at 981?

OR, could they do the opposite: move closer to Gainesville by dropping in class/power/height? My guess is no, due to required clearance to 100.9/Gainesville.

WHHZ never changed COL. It has been licensed to Newberry since day one, and remains licensed to Newberry today. It did change TL from an area near High Springs, where it was previously licensed as a C3, to the WKZY/WDVH-FM tower in Trenton and upgraded to a class C2. It cannot upgrade to the next highest class which is a C1 due to short-spacing issues. It also cannot move any closer to Gainesville due to second adjancent WXJZ which it is required to protect. Kmagrill can tell you more about the technical aspects, but basically WHHZ is operating at maximum facilities now with a TL as close to Gainesville as it can get without causing a technical problem for another station.

They have done quite well at upgrading, but they've pretty much exhausted their moves, for now. Since they are the only station licensed to Newberry, they cannot change COL and that limits how far they can move in any one direction. Aside from the COL issue, spacing requirements prevent them from getting too close to WXJZ, thus keeping them locked out of Gainesville proper, forever, at any class.

What about going up in height in Trenton?

Local zoning is the other reason; otherwise I believe WKZY would have been placed on a 981 foot tower at its present location instead of its current one at 469 feet.

Each class of station has a maximum height and power. If the station exceeds the max height, the power has to be reduced in proportion so that the service contour doesn't extend further than it would if the station was at the nominal height for its class. In the case of WHHZ, the class height is 150 meters, which is exactly where they are. Even if they could go higher up, they would have to start reducing power from this point on up, so it's no gain for them.

KZY had an opportunity to build a 981 ft stick in Trenton, discrepancies with the land owners around their current location prevented this from happening as the tower would've to have been placed on land Pamal did not own.

There were also local zoning issues involved with that move. The existing tower was constructed by Duane McConnel and Jim Johnson in 2000 before Pamal (6 Johnson Road Licneses, LLC) acquired "Kozy 106.9". Pamal did manage to upgrade and improve the 100.5 signal somewhat. Interestingly, WTMG, with its inferior rimshot signal, performs the best and is the highest billing station out of the Pamal Gainesville cluster. It's amazing what a station can do when it gives the market what it wants by filing a void no one else is filling.

It's true... it was so unique and offered something no one else did. (still do, but is more mass appeal-- which is for the better in 2010) but, for a Class A in Williston. It still cranks!

The moniker "the buzz" invokes alternative rock. Why not move more mainstream to "Rock 1005"?

Orginally when The Buzz moniker was adopted, WHHZ was an alternative rock formatted station.
