Which AC Billy Goat Will Donn The Red Sweater First?

S

Scooter Lesley

Guest
Well,...today is November the one-th, and we are just days away from one...
or both of the AC Billy Goats donning the red sweaters.
So,...gang which one launch "Dumb, but Festive"...all Christmas...first?
Have at it!

I don't think it will matter in the long run, but I say MAGIC. They are getting a lot of Facebook requests for it already. All Christmas didn't do as well here as it did in a lotof other markets last year. I think WSPA won Christmas last year but it was not a huge book.

Question for the Think Tank:
So,...for either or both of the AC's...Is going all Christmas actually cheaper?
-Cheaper than their standard format?
-A smoke screen for a Big change after Christmas?

Oh Dear God in Heaven will it be a beautiful day for me if My102.5 flips formats on December 26th!

Fingers crossed, and praying!

What do you want it to flip to? I think it's a heck of a lot better than it was and they're getting more Hot AC every day it seems. I know there are quite a few people that are liking the flip they already made. (Although I do agree with the too much Gaga comment). Magic is fine for the traditional AC and there B93.7 is to urban leaning for much of the 20s-40s population. So in my mind, MY has made the right move already. The filled a gap that's needed in our area IMO.

The only thing that could send it sinking is if they start all-Christmas with Magic. Think it'll be hard to keep that base over the holidays and come back in January.

Well, just heard Dave Kent a little while ago announce that if you're "itching" for Christmas music, WMYI is streaming it online. That at least gives me some hope that maybe that's MY's plan. Keep playing the Hot AC and if their listeners really want Christmas, stream it.

Sounds good to me!

EDIT: Just checked their website and there's a promo for their Michael Buble contest for a trip to NYC. On that page they've got some disturbing wording, "Just listen to win on the Carolinas' Christmas Music Station, My 102.5!" UGHH! I know a few of you said you wanted another format change, but I like their new format now. If they do play Christmas music, I'm afraid they will blow it.

Christmas music on MY will not go over well. It does NOT mesh with the format they have/aim for now and didn't even do well for them last year when they had a format that fit all-Christmas. It fits much better on Magic, and heck, they do it better. Better mix. All-Christmas is best when on mainstream AC or, in some cases, classic hits.
So, we're going to go from Third Eye Blind, Foster The People, Tio Cruz, Hot Chelle Rae, etc. to Andy Williams and Bing Crosby?
Wretched!

I don't think it's wise to go all-Christmas 4 months after you made a drastic change like they did. They are still establishing themselves with the hot AC mix. And, I agree with awp69 - I love MY, and I want them to succeed. It's finally something different. However, stations I've liked before (Oldies 106.3, Charlie, 96.7 The Buzzard) have all flipped, so who knows. Hot AC doesn't have a stellar track record in the southeast. I worry this could throw a wrench in their fall ratings, since summer was so successful for them.

I don't know anything better for 102.5 unless they went classic hits or CHR should fresh not work. I hope the station stays, but I'm very frusturated (however, not surprised) with this move.

disagree car radio i think people listen to radio and are saavy enough to find something they like. lots of people like christmas music. they will come back to 102.5 and 98.9 after the holidays. both stations will promote their almost year round format to try to bring them back. sample us please! it is not about year round ratings anymore. it's about what radio can sell to advertisers. even arbitron has adjusted the survey periods to try to limit the effect of all christmas stations. if the superbowl was going to be on a tv station who's news team was awful, would you not watch?

Since he mentioned the streaming, I fired off an e-mail to Dave Kent just out of curiousity to see what the Christmas plans were.

He actually did reply, but only commented on my praise of the format change and didn't answer my question about whether they were going to flip to all Christmas. He did CC: Marne Mason and Lizz Ryals so I'm wondering if he was attempting to show others a listeners thoughts against going all Christmas.

I'm sure the decision has already been made either way though. Not sure if he just didn't want to let the cat out of the bag, but his lack of response makes me believe they are going to all-Christmas at some point.

Magic is definitely going all-Christmas (like there was ever any doubt), and it doesn't seem very far away. They are pushing it more this year than ever, it seems. They've been the first to go all-Christmas each year for a while, so I expect that to continue this year. MY usually follows several hours later.

While I hope all-Christmas doesn't run people off and the listeners that don't like it do come back to MY, I just worry this could dent the momentum they look to have been gaining in the last book and it will be like starting over for them. Magic just does a better job with all-Christmas, their execution of it is better. They have more variety, but not too much.

The only thing different,...and/or good...this year...is that you are out of the Fall book on December the 8th. Less damage!
Allllledg-ed-ly,(?) MY will stay as is, and has opted to stream their "Dumb, but Festive" on their website.

Hope you're right!

I hate to keep saying it, but I'm pretty sure they'll go all Christmas. They said back in September(?) that there was a poll on their website asking when the listeners want all Christmas music on 102.5.

Pretty sad if people really favored all-Christmas in that poll. I may like to get into the holiday spirit as well, but just can't take "Here Comes Santa Claus" 24 hours a day. If any station goes all-Christmas, I think it should be like two weeks tops. Not two months.

Well,...let's see the hands of those who believe that the on-line Christmas poll was nothing more than Horseshit, mirrors, and Consultant fakery. The truth today is most businesses have Sat Radio because they can take it off their taxes, as an entertainment expense. If they want all Christmas, with "NO" commercials,
...someone please hand me the remote...and Switcharoo...here comes the Holly Jolly...Burl Ives...Oh, by Golly! It's just a seasonal representation of what I've said about "Office Listening". For either or both AC's, it's a battle they can no longer win. Satellite has claimed that ground, and bonused them with a tax deduction. How the Grinch stole what we once easily had!

Not sure if I'm interpreting your post correctly Scooter, but if I am, you're right. Satellite radio already fills the need for all-holiday music stations (heck, they fill the need for all-Elvis and all-Bruce Springsteen stations too).

With satellite and even digital cable music stations, there's really no need for any commercial station to go all-Christmas. If HD radio hadn't done as poorly as it did, that also would have been a perfect outlet -- an HD2 station that caters to seasonal desires.

At home, pump it out on those stereos via your cable provider. And if you don't have satellite radio, put in a CD. While switching stations when a song you don't like comes on is commonplace even with normal format, all-Christmas is generally either you listen to it or you don't. And until Christmas Eve rolls around, I fall in the later category.

That's logical but not radio ratings reality. Christmas music is so few songs, you'd think an iPod would fullfill any desire for Christmas music. If not that, there's always Pandora.

It is notable to say, though, that not a TON of people have satellite radio, and most sure as heck aren't going to switch to it just for Christmas music 24/7.

I guess we can say one thing, Delilah fits on an all Christmas station. The sad thing is, there is nowhere for listeners of Magic 98.9 and MY 102.5 that don't want Christmas music to go. I like Clear Channel's iHeartRadio....guess I'll have to find something on there.
