Which AM stations do you still listen to on a regular (or every day) basis?

I believe it's still one tower in the back of a lumberyard near Thomas Rd. and 64th St. in Snobsdale.

Well, if it's a non-directional, I doubt that any increase in night power would be allowable without a directional array during those hours. Sorry, @LamptimerFan.

True, but it covers a 15-20 mile radius with its 52,000 miliwatts pretty well. I can hear it just fine as long as I'm listening outside or in my car. Inside, it's either the 92.7 translator or 93.3-HD2.

KYNR 1490 Toppenish. No live stream and little presence on the Internet. Wide playlist (1950s pop to 2020s currents) and lots of powwow chants. Local to me, about 15 miles SE.
Last Friday night I enjoyed a *CRYSTAL-CLEAR* CJDC-890 Dawson Creek BC while on my delivery run.

@LamptimerFan I forgot about my Part 15 on 1610 AM.

My "format" varies widely, from oldies to standards and easy listening, and even classical and new age stuff like Celtic harp.

At the moment, it's a fairly mundane mix of soft rock 70s-80s which is somewhat of an amalgamation of KNX-FM's "Mellow Sound," KTEA out of Cambria, CA, and various other sources.

One signal is kind of limiting, so I might set up a second one so I can have, say, oldies and soft/yacht rock on one and easy listening on the other.

My daily station here in the Southwest part of Nova Scotia is 1370 WDEA in Ellsworth Maine. It's always on when I am in my workshop. I much prefer their music than what's on the local station here. It comes in quite clear daytimes. They also broadcast the Red Sox games too, which I rather enjoy while puttering in my workshop.

Being originally from the Boston area, I do sometimes try some night listening to see if I can catch any stations from that area as well.
WDEA's transmitter is on Union River Bay south of Ellsworth and their signal goes straight across the water to NS. I'm sure WBZ 1030 blasts in there as well.

My regular AM's:

WSM 650
KWRE Warrenton, MO 730
CFZM Toronto 740
WJBM Jerseyville, IL 1480
CHHA Toronto 1610

Also, last week I was in my car tuning around the band overnight Monday, and listened to 530, which is Radio Enciclopedia (Cuba), doing slow fades of its easy listening format. I also heard CHLO Toronto in the background. My Kenwood is HD, and the digital light flashed, though it did not lock. At 1 kW/250 w analog, I'm not sure what CHLO's digital transmitter power is, but even getting the digital signal to light up was impressive from St. Louis.

Forgive me if you've advertised it before and I'm forgetting, but is a stream of your station available? I would love hearing that hybridization in action. themellowsound.net and 97litefm.com are already in my Winamp bookmarks, both of which I believe were started by fans of the old KNX-FM.

I want to clarify that my sound is probably leaning more toward KNX-FM, because I've been on a song-adding spree, and I found many nice examples while listening to TheMellowSound.net.

Last night I added in a few older songs from the 60s that I thought fit well enough.

Do you stream?

If he does, it will be the first time I ever heard of a Part 15 AM operator doing so. (Not that it couldn't happen, just that a Part 15 operator usually isn't interested in an audience other than his own family.)

Well, officially, I don't have a stream.

Unofficially, however, I do have one set up for myself for fun and experimentation. I want to get a Live365 subscription eventually (they cover the licensing) so I can make it official and not worry about the Licensing Gestapo coming after me.

First off, how do you set one up privately like that?

I also want to eventually set up a website and a Live365 subscription as well. Only problem is that the cost for 3 of them would be outrageous no matter how I slice it.

It's truly amazing to listen to the AM band in Atlantic Canada. Other than WBZ, there's almost nothing on in middays. Within a few hours of sunrise and sunset, several Boston AMs are heard and maybe WDEA or WGAN Portland. Maybe a NYC station. I remember WBBR 1130 came in sometimes but again, not in middays.

I believe there are still two AM stations in the Maritimes, one in Nova Scotia and one in New Brunswick. But when I was there listening in my car they didn't stop my radio when I hit the scan button.

One of the few functions of the AM band in the US is to support formats that can't be supported on FM, like standards or programs for smaller ethnic groups.

That isn't a thing in the sparsely-populated Maritimes, where the FM band is pretty blank. There's only 99 FMs in Nova Scotia, and a quarter of those are the Canadian equivalent of translators. Nova Scotia is about the same land area as West Virginia, which has almost 300 FMs licensed.

I’ve been in Fredericksburg, Texas for much of this week, and have tuned to the local 910 KNAF. Polkas in the morning, country of the Willie-and-Waylon variety the rest of the day. This is the Hill Country, after all. Long local newscasts which are largely composed of community-calendar items. Fifteen minutes for “Trading Post”. Some local spots but not a whole lot of them. I suspect KNAF’s more mainstream FM station is what’s carrying them.

Another case for an example is Los Angeles, where there are no full-time sports stations on FM. My guess is that every one of the major players have FM stations doing well with music (except for KNX-FM). As a consequence, KLAC (570) has a respectable following, followed by poor second place, KESP (710) and third place KLAA (830)

NFL Football is the only sport carried on FM and it's just the regular season. In fact, the Superbowl was carried on KLAC, but not on KLAC online.

I mentioned earlier, that I listen to KNX 1070, but I need to mention that KFI (640) still has a sizable audience (just not me). Once in a while, I tune in to KMZT 1260, but with KUSC I really don't need to.
