Small markets...then the small minds came along and thought that these poor little country folks would listen to whatever crap we chose to hash out at them on the dial :)

Touche' Hitman. I never could figure out why Altoona (#263) is a smaller market than State College (#250). Altoona is technically a city. I'd figure it a bigger market.

Altoon's population has been on a steady decline while State College's is building. To give you an idea how bad it is...when I started in thiz biz wayyyyy back when...Altoona and State College were literally one apart, although if memory serves, I think State College was always the larger of the 2. Also...State College COULD and WOULD be a city it is consolidated which is something the local governments seem hell bent NOT to do.

Then I wonder what boundaries they use around here to determine the market. The Borough and the Townships will never, ever consolidate. That means too many people having to turn over power and just like the school boards and Act 72 gambling money, townships have no intention of turning over power to the Borough and vice versa.

But where are the boundaries? Centre County lines? Even WIEZ-AM which is in Lewistown and not even part of a market made some inbounds by picking up Rush. Once Dame dropped it and picked up Sean Hannity, WIEZ scooped up Rush and they got a point or two in this market.

Even Altoona...I would think that the boundaries are not the city lines. Even Philly, one of the largest markets in the country crosses over county lines and even state lines into NJ, DE and some spots in MD. Philly stations get ratings points in the Lancaster market the Reading market and even down in Atlantic City.

Thoughts?

I hope the 2 share points are enough to pay Rush's $1,200 @ month fee - that's a lot of 2 dollar spots.

I assume they sell it in Lewistown somehow. Not sure how they use Arbitrons to show ratings if they sell that way. Between here and Harrisburg, there isn't any market that I'm aware of that recognizes stations down in Lewistown/Mifflin County. I also assume someone here switched over to WIEZ to listen to Rush and wound up getting a diary.

Let me tell you something...back when WMAJ used to carry RUSH...be was one of the biggest draws for advertisers...people used to get royally Jacked when Rush was cut off to carry sporting events...that is how loyal his audience is.

Love him or hate him...Dame was very foolish to let him go and he's worth every penny of his $1200 fee per month...that's only $14,400 which is pretty damn comparable to what most stations pay their low level talent anyway!

Gosh golly even my tiny mind understands Arbitron is based on population. Altoona way down over the years. It shows Penn Stae has no idea that people spending tax payer dollars have no idea either, even if they claim they are EXPERTS! Agency buys for years? You are kidding.

Morning Jog Time! I am so bubbley, Oh my spelling error.....

Arbitron's market definitions

Y'all make good points, but Arbitron uses county lines as their boundaries--usually the same counties that the feds use to define "Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas" (SMSAs). For State College that's Centre County; for Altoona it's Blair County. And Centre has more population than Blair, so SC is the bigger market. Total Survey Areas (TSAs) are done differently--Arbitron includes counties that generate a certain percentage of their listenership from the "metro" county as part of the TSA. So some counties are part of several different TSA reports. Clearfield County, for instance, is in both the Altoona TSA and the State College TSA. The State College TSA includes Mifflin, Huntingdon, Clearfield and Clinton counties along with Centre. Somebody was asking about Lewistown--that's in Mifflin, so WIEZ could get "Rush" numbers for Lewistown from the TSA report if they wanted to. Then again, they've also been scoring a few points in the "metro," too, so it probably adds up to a decent size audience.
