Which company has the best urban stations

I was wondering since we have been talking about the best and worst radio stations, which broadcasting company had the best urban and urban ac stations.

Carter Broadcasting Kansas City
CBS Radio Atlanta, Charlotte
Service Dallas
Clear Channel Detroit, Chicago,Memphis and Bay Area

How about the longtime local owner of WDKX Rochester?

Service used to be but would no longer be on my list. Carter would probably still be on there but not what it was years ago.

I can agree with all except Service. Service Broadcasting could be way better than they are considering they are local, but are not. Aside from Dee McGuire, their talent is lacking as well as overall musical programming choices. K-104 is a joke and even those in the (DFW) MetroPlex knows that one. I'm still trying to figure out the purpose of the 105.7 frequency other than being a dumping ground for 20 years+ urban hits and gold records. K-104 could be easily a full-service urban contemporary.

Clear Channel in San Francisco, Chicago, Hampton Roads and Philly
CBS in Atlanta and DC
Radio One in Atlanta and Houston (KMJQ only)
Entercom in San Fran (from KBLX's ICBC days)
Cox Atlanta
Kemp Broadcasting Las Vegas (local)

CBS and RadioOne do great jobs here as far as Urban, but Cox?????? I know POWER 105.1 in NY is CC's Urban flagship, but does Cumulus have one?

Technically, Cumulus does have an urban flagship, but it is in the most unexpected place, Little Rock. It's "Power 92.3 Jams" KIPR, which was something they gained from Citadel, which was their urban flagship. It's also the only urban they have that still live and local 24/7.

The New Orleans Cumulus Urban AC is still live and local in AM drive.

The funny reason why KMEZ is local is not by choice. Steve Harvey and Tom Joyner are contractly bound to the CC New Orleans mainstream urban/urban AC combo. Citadel tried to get Harvey for KMEZ some years ago it upon its shift to the UAC format, but CC whom is cahoots with Harvey's syndicator placed him on Q93 instead.

KIPR is live and local by choice because they could have dumped Broadway Joe years ago for syndication, but the station and its morning show are consistently among the top 3 stations in the Little Rock market. Also the revenue stream the local show brings in for them is actually good as well.

Speaking of Cumulus, to me they run theirs well in Shreveport and Baton Rouge.

You do have a point on some stations not having shows by choice. I'm pretty sure in Shreveport KMJJ is stuck with Big Boy only because KBTT has Rickey Smiley given that Big Boy has the 2nd shortest run of any syndicated urban program behind Star and Bucwild. And WIBB Macon is the ONLY Clear Channel station to run Smiley thus far.

Rickey Smiley is also on Clear Channel Urban stations in Columbus,GA and Albany,Ga.

Cumulus dropped it's local morning show on MAX 94.1 in favor of Smiley.
