WHICH FM WILL FLIP TO SPORTS: KISS OR K104?

Charlotte's CHR showdown has left it's toll on WNKS, Kiss 95.1 ::) and with the most changes to a morning lineup and positioning, WKQC, K104.7 has to also find itself a viable candidate to become Charlotte's first FM Sports station. As a future flagship for Panthers football wouldn't owners turn poor performance into a solid paycheck ???

What other Charlotte FMs would make a great flip to sports?

K is the only AC now. And even though it's so much more high-energy than it was, I don't think WLNK would be a good substitute. WLNK would have to turn down the volume, but with their emphasis on personalities and AC's more music less talk approach, I don't see it happening.

I know the last time I went in a bank K was pretty unpleasant, but fortunately the volume was low.

Kiss is not serving a purpose now. They could go all sports.

Interesting to note that Ace and TJ were described in the Observer as being on Kiss in an article about raising money for honoring two Charlotte police officers killed in the line of duty. One would think they'd mention the fact they moved to another station, but I guess it wasn't essential to the article as they did the fund-raising while at Kiss.

It doesn't look like K104.7 will be flipping to sports anytime soon. CBS Radio Charlotte has an employment posting on All Access for an AC morning show talent. Could Todd Baker be getting a new partner?

The 1st time I heard this rumor was last summer. KISS is sucking wind, so they would be the candidate. Why is CHR working everywhere BUT CLT?

There is literally zero chance of either station flipping to Sports.

I think Kiss 95.1 sounds significantly better than both the ratings and commentators here suggest, but the numbers don't lie and Ace & TJ (and Channel 96.1 as a whole) have severely damaged the station. For those familiar with the Atlanta market, the situation is eerily reminiscent of Star 94's struggles in 2008-10 after longtime morning duo Steve & Vikki exited and Q100 immediately usurped the Top 40 crown. Star ultimately regained its footing, but it required significant formatic refocusing. Kiss is absolutely a salvageable radio station and already has quality puzzle pieces in place, but with such dominant morning competition, they may still be a few tweaks away from realizing their former glory.

Are you kidding me? KISS will have to make more than a "few tweaks" to fix the rut that they have put themselves in. They are not only so far behind in the morning ratings, but as a whole station behind in music and lacking in talent. Let's not forget that ever since Ace&TJ left - two mornings shows have been up to the challenge. One failed and the other is continuing to fail and not come close to holding a good standing in ratings. Although, Otis and Brittney were a nagging annoyance to listen to, I'd much rather hear them babble about random nonsense, with ear plugs in, of course, than listen to these two idiots (Drex & Maney) talk about their babies taking a crap and how either parent wipes their a**. Let's also not forgot about how one of the two (Maney) managed to plan a contest while in Sacramento, CA., which ultimately killed a mother of 3. Let's talk about those kids for a minute and how a stupid, idiotic idea ruined their lives and yet his life and career continuing to suck more life out of Charlotte citizens. Granted, it was the woman's choice to take part-in and continue the contest after receiving advice of NOT doing it. The station still went through with the contest anyway. Complete morons.

Oh, and bringing back Breezecat? Really? If that isn't the the biggest joke at trying to get back at the former #1 show on KISS than I do not know what else these two can really pull off that is actually FUNNY. This is the "professional" who got so blackout drunk at a client-related area and threw up everywhere. Reallll smooth, buddy. And didn't he go to Raleigh? Oh, that's right. He got fired there and was not welcomed back to his beloved show.
Forget holding my piss, I would never hold my breath in hopes of this show or KISS ever succeeding.

Bring on the sports!

Well they still call Kiss 95.1 "the number 1 hit music station," which clearly is not the case anymore. It was indeed a mistake when they let Ace and TJ get away. It has been downhill ever since, and they are now a distant second to Channel 96.1 in the CHR category. And 96.1 overall sounds better. So it does seem as if Kiss may be subject to flip. I don't think K-104 has fallen as far, but I suppose it depends on demographics and target audiences, as well as overall ratings. But if Kiss were to flip, would sports be the only choice? What about another news/talk channel for FM? Or some other music category? But it should be noted that 95.1 has a much wider coverage area than 104.7, which is limited by WNOK in Columbia. Overall stronger signal for Kiss if that is part of the consideration regarding any changes in format that may be made. But does seem like something should be done.

I think people might be exaggerating this CHR situation - WHQC has a 4.7 share, and WNKS has a 4.3 share - that's really not a huge amount of difference

I don't think CBS could even come close to a 4.3 share by flipping it to Sports, and they'd be handing Clear Channel a 9.0 share (the two CHRs combined) and the #1 station in the market

i can't figure out how Sports talk makes money without numbers. Somebody tell me how it's done.

Desirable demographics

Advertiser gets more bang for the buck and it outweighs a station with good numbers in a bad demo.

"I think people might be exaggerating this CHR situation"

I agree. Country is king in Charlotte.

I personally like Kiss 95.1, because I know they have live jocks. I hate listening to Ryan Seacrest on Channel 96-1.

Yes, but the numbers need to be decent, or there will be no $$$$$$

Sports Talk bills higher than its share, if that's what you mean, but there's no guarantee what the share is - CBS's Sports FM station in Atlanta still has a 0.6 share after 6 months, and that was from flipping a station with a 2.3 share - I think they learned their lesson, at least for now

Kiss has been trending up for two books now, from 3.7 to 4.3, just 0.4 points below WHQC - they could likely overtake WHQC is the next couple of months if the trend continues

CBS already has sports in Charlotte, 610 WFNZ. They would obviously move that to FM and probably pick up a few listeners along the way.

But if the numbers aren't there, no one is going to advertise to mythical "desirable demographics". Which by the way are females....you know, those who don't listen to sports?

Apparently CBS has abandoned plans to add an HD Radio signal for 95.1, as well as 103.7. It was planned several years ago, but has never happened.

True, so any speculation about WKQC or WNKS in Charlotte changing formats should be laid to rest.

I don't see the correlation here...?

Not that it may make a difference, but 104.7 has an HD Radio signal, whereas 95.1 does not. They seem to have abandoned plans to add the digital version to 95.1 as well as 103.7.
