Worcester Which format do you think will be brought to the Worcester market next?

I mean, I'm pretty sure a lot of people listening to the radio in the area want more local choice, given the rather limited number of commercial stations in the market (the Fitchburg-Gardner area really only has WPKZ and WGAW for local programming) and the reliance on Boston stations. No one in the market is currently doing Top 40 (WXLO having Hot AC probably doesn't help) or active rock (especially after WAAF was given the Jesuscaster fate a few years back), so opportunities are open (especially if one of the several AM Jesuscasters in the area decides to sell and the new owners decide to pair the station up with a FM translator).

If the AM doesn't already have an FM translator, the new owners are stuck on AM only until the next FCC filing window. Which, it appears, will happen never.
Of the stations in the market that do, two are WORC and WVNE, whose translators do have "sweet spot" coverage of Worcester itself, but I doubt their owners are ever gonna sell.

Gois sold a translator in CT to a massachusetts LPFM.. rendering the AM more useless than it already was

Worcester's 100FM The Pike, which bills itself as Worcester's Rock Station, plays rock and basically became the new WAAF, didn't they? Mike Hsu (morning drive) and Mistress Carrie (afternoon drive) moved from what was WAAF to The Pike.

WWFX is classic rock, rather than active (but nothing's stopping Cumulus from upgrading the format). Plus, its signal is pretty weak if you're not in a specific area (at least on my end).

Then again, it figures they'd get ex-WAAF talent, Carrie actually grew up in Leominster.

I wonder if XLO would ever consider shifting its emphasis to the Boston market?

They've got multiple booster signals in the Boston Metro. There is far more ad revenue available in Boston than Worcester.

It would be amusing to me if The Pike relocated to 104.5 to greater capitalize on Boston market signal presence. The playlist would likely require refinement. There is only one reliable signal for any guitar based rock music in greater Boston - 100.7.

I'm not necessarily recommending such a format move be made. It would be risky for sure. XLO as a Hot AC pulls decent shares in Boston much of the time for being a Worcester-focused station.

Also, as much as I love the guitar-based rock of my youth through my forties, it's apparent now that the succeeding generations have, for the most part, moved on from those sounds, as has radio that wants under-45 listeners. Putting current guitar-heavy rock on 104.5 and then directing its signal toward Boston would attract a minimal audience and trying to win Boston advertisers over with such a station would be impossible.

A station im now involved with pulled kinda decent numbers in Cheyenne for being a Laramie station thats just a jukebox outside a syndicated morning show. Doesnt mean were going to keep paying for ratings and focus on cheyenne.

Cheyenne has enough signals and very few cover all of market #244 but one of ours does and few signals not in Laramie pay it anuy attention. Our focus is Laramie
