Which is best?

If you had a "clean slate" which network ESPN, CBS sports, NBC sports, Westwood, or Yahoo sports would get you the best ratings not counting local content?

"Sportsbyline USA" hardly have any shows, if any, maybe two hour shows. They do have Overnight shows, don't know if (every) hour of their overnight shows are live or pre-recorded?

If I had an owner with cash I'd go with ESPN. Not a big fan of them since all they seem to have on these days are in house people but it's got name recognition with listeners and advertisers, so if people knew you were the ESPN Radio station in the market when listeners heard mentions across the 8 or so ESPN platforms, then you could get listeners and advertisers to offset the costs.

If I had an owner with no cash and wanted something totally free, Yahoo is where I'd go. I'd stay away from Fox because it has nothing, other than a name, attached to Fox and you're dealing with Clear Channel. I only want to deal with Clear Channel when it comes to their high profile syndication like AT40, Limbaugh, Beck, etc. Now if FSR was actually related to Fox Sports then it'd be another situation...

I would go with YSR, too. ESPN is too sterile and "big market" and spends too much time gazing at its own navel and talking up the TV side for my long-term listening taste. YSR seems like it would be easier to build a new, localized identity around than The Mothership.

Where are you located? Where are the hosts on your desired network located, or is there possibly a regional bias you could exploit (for example, FSR is based in LA; ESPN in Bristol; YSR in Houston...and occasionally their shows reflect that)? Does one network do more NASCAR or NFL or College sports than another that might be better fit for your audience? You might consider trying to match the network to your needs.

It's an AM with market coverage + day about half of the market at night. No chance of a FM translator for now. There are 2 and a half viable AM's close. The terrain is not FM friendly and only 2 class A's and one B within a 30 miles. We plan a lot of local HS sports. Typical of most operators we will have to rely in the bird until finances shore up. The good college sports is unavailable, alumni owning the competing station that has them.

Cowherd is by far the best syndicated sports talker. DP a close second. The overall product a ESPN is better, simply because of M & M's "likeability" and Cowherd's more in your face approach. The rest are just okay.

But, the other networks Yahoo & FSR are a shell of what they once were. We'll see how NBC & CBS affects the syndicated dynamic. I think they could be players if they do it right.

Yahoo! still has the best people. They're real and not corporate shills. Who know if CBS will poach their lineup at all? FSR causes ear cancer.

If I'm in a major market and have 7 or more hours of local shows daily plus a large helping of college/professional play-by-play, I'd probably choose YSR for filler.

But in Podunk, I'd choose ESPN. I think they have the best all-around daily lineup. Plus, the ESPN affiliation gives you lucrative play-by-play (Sunday Night Baseball, weekly NBA games, college bowls) and cross-promotion from the TV side.

Not a fan of FSR's talent or strategy.

Can't say much about the new networks.
