To use a well-worn quote, "here we go ..."
(1) I'm not qualified to comment on rock music. While I sometimes get a bit gratuitous and say music died in 1985, let's say I know what I like, and that's not the topic of this particular discussion.
(2) Having said that ... KQV is the best news station, though not by all that much, as Pittsburgh is blessed with news outlets.
KDKA can get better under Marshall Adams, who was pretty good in news gigs here before heading south. He truly will give AM 1020 what the TV side could have called a hometown advantage.
Also, KD certainly has the best array of audio sources, with its TV sibling, CBS, CNN and AP (the latter two also heard on KQV).
(But KQV's Radio Pennsylvania link and its use of the Trib's fulltime Harrisburg correspondents are boosts to AM 1410; also, adding Bloomberg features is a good selling point.)
WPGB is a great headline service, but it conveniently forgets WDUQ when it calls itself "Pittsburgh's FM news, weather, traffic and sports station."
By the way, did anyone notice, ironically, that Fox News Radio started running on WPGB? Interesting ... After the last Pittsburgh Super Bowl, Sinclair's Fox 53 began a newscast (which ended last week, of course). Now, after this Super Bowl, Fox News Radio shows up on FM 104.7. Coincidental, to be sure, but interesting.
(3) Talk is in the ear of the behearer. If you like conservative, WPGB. If you like liberal, WPTT. If you wonder what's going to happen next, KDKA.
(4) Country: WDSY has the personalities, but Keymarket's Frogs do have their moments (such as when the Povertyneck Hillbillies show up for live gigs on Danger Frog's show).
(5) Oldies: Good question.
(6) Classical/Fine Arts: For variety, try one of the West Virginia Public Radio stations that are receptable here, 89.9 out of Wheeling or 90.9 out of Morgantown.
But what do I know?
