Which Kansas City Radio Stations Deserve a Second Chance?

Earlier this month, I started a discussion on what radio stations in St. Louis would be given a second chance. So this time, I'll do the same for the Kansas City area. My question is, which defunct and/or long gone radio stations in the KC metro market should get a second shot? I haven't any candidates that I thought up, so I'll leave it to anyone knowledgeable about Kansas City to submit suggestions. So let the discussion begin.

I agree with E105. There hasn't been a decent Hot AC in KC since the flip to Jack.

Since KUDL is gone, maybe Star 102 deserves a second chance. Alice is a non-starter.

How about KUDL maintaining the status quo, instead of being an FM repeater for KMBZ-AM?

It would be great to have Star 102 back. Their AC format was way better than KUDL. I remeber when Star 102 started to add more upbeat music after E 105 flipped to Jack. Only thing that killed them was John Tesh. The Planet was a decent AAA station too bad Union sold it.

It was a LONG time ago, but I still miss KSAS, "SAS 106 1/2!" (early 80's)

KXXR, "Today's Rock & Roll" came later to 106.5, and it was pretty cutting edge as well. (late 80's / early 90's)

If anyone deserves a second chance it's Star 102, they got shoved to a bad spot. They thought a format flip could be a smart move but no one knew GEN X and Kudl would do what they did.

I however vote for GEN X, that was the single best station i've ever listened to...killed in it's prime because someone wanted talk radio on FM. Boring! Talk = AM, Music = FM it should stay this way

Z 95.7, with a HEAVY Rhythmic-lean. Miss that station. The Vibe was great when it started, but since it changed to Pop in 2009, it has sucked. Also, "e105", KUDL, Kiss (on 99.7) and Gen X. Gen X was taken away too soon. Star does NOT need to come back. I never liked that station in the first place. Alice rocks!

Z 95.7 sounded good but never a ratings winner. Flipping back and forth to CHR and Rhythmic it was confusing. Cumulus tried CHR when they took over and it flopped in 2004. The Vibe was good when it first started I agree when Hip Hop music was still popular. Star 102 was better than KUDL music wise. It just all went downhill when CBS sold it to Wilks. The GEN X format is losing some of its steam mostly Clear Channel stations but E 105 Retro to Right Now would be great. I even enjoyed that stations when they stop playing currents.

ZZ99. Johnny Rowlands was the PD...a station that tried Rock 40 before anyone had even thought of a Rock 40. They went through some evolution in the short time they were around and, IMHO, was a fun sounding radio station.

106.5 the x was a great station (plus it had mancow muller) the old q104 that played in the late 80/s to early 90's was great- played pop, hair bands, rap and easy listening - all in one station and randy miller was at his best.

I really wasn't around the era of Q104 (it flipped to Country just 3 months before I was born). But, I do think Z (and STICK with the Rhythmic direction rather than flip back and forth), e105, and KUDL need to come back.

Bring back 61 Country! I know WDAF is on 106.5 FM, but I'm in SW Missouri and can't get that on an ordinary radio.

61 Country was legend. When they switched to Sports Talk that was a really sad day!!

And, yes, I just joined up here today. :)

KY102 definitely. As for "not quite KC" stations - The Lazer and Q96.

I'd be all for bringing back 61 Country-WDAF, The Rhythm of the City... 1190-KJLA and 1140-KLDY (K-Oldie).  Each station had a unique position in the market, personalities that actually sounded like they wanted to be there and each station was live and local to Kansas City.  I also miss the days of Music 81-KCMO.

Agreed.

From researching the Kansas City dial, it's unfortunate there is no soft rock station to listen to! After KUDL went news/talk, 99.7 was AC for a little while and it's now a Hot AC/Adult Top 40. I say KUDL needs to be tried again! The only way out, right now, is a very staticky KMAJ 107.7 (and even that is in and out on crappy radios).
