which one goes talk: wisx or wrff

Assuming CC picks up Beck and Hannity (and then possibly even wrestles Rush from WPHT).. let's speculate on which property they will switch to talk.

WRFF has a better history then WISX. However, it has been in a ratings slump lately. There is also somewhat of a demo conflict with Q102. And the demo (male 18-34) isn't exactly an easy sell to advertisers.

WISX has always been an underperforming station, however no doubt it has much more advertiser-friendly demos (females 35-54). Then again, it is competing for a slice of pie that has been ... well, sliced into many pieces.

Thoughts? I would put the odds slightly higher that WRFF would be the one to flip to Talk..

I dunno if either would go.

RFF is dirt cheap to run. I seriously think they have 5 people working for that station, and radio1045.com gets alot of hits (compared to the other CC Philly stations), which brings in extra money. It is my understanding that the format was designed to rely less on advertisers (and air less ads) & more on getting people to the website and buying tunes thru them.

They have been in a slump the last few months, but then again power99 has had bigger declines in the same period, plus costs alot to run (2nd to Q102 I believe), & I think competes with Q102 more then radio104.5 does. Without power, Q102 could add more hip hop to their playlist and challenge wired better. Now power is a heritage station, but CC has never cared about that. They killed off wdas for Rumba's call letters afterall. So i'm gonna put power99 as the wildcard in any such format flip.

As for the more realistic choices, ultimately its upto mix. Right now it has to be the weaker station, because its the one CC has taken action with. If they don't improve, then I think they go. If they improve as the format tweak intends, then it will be radio 1045.

I would agree with Irish and vote neither, as well. Not only because of what was already laid out above, but rock is PPM-friendly, despite WRFF's aforementioned slump. So to blow up Radio 104.5 would be cutting off CC's nose to spite their head. Plus, they're better off staying the course with 104.5, since it won't be long before WYSP drops the "rock you grew up with" format and there is one fewer competitor in the Philly rock radio race.

Neither. WPEN a possibility. Beck, Hannity, Laura Ingraham, and Mark Levin at night would be a pretty strong lineup. Just need a morning show.

Tom Taylor suggested WPEN (AM) in his newsletter today.

Or perhaps they could move the sports format exclusively to 950 AM and bring talk radio back to FM? Greater Media is already paying Entercom to use the WBEN calls (Buffalo) on the FM side in Philadelphia - could they do the same with Beasley for the WWDB calls?

If they move sports talk back to AM it kills the biggest selling point that WPEN has (FM) for the sports talk format (lack of AM static). 950 going talk makes more sense IF a CC property doesn't flip first.

If you have a sports format and a conservative talk format, and you have one FM station and one AM station, you have to put the sports format on FM. Much better potential for lower demos with sports.

Maybe Clear Channel just wants to buy 950.

Well, I do believe they only own one AM station in Philly in WUBA - and the max as far as AM stations is concerned is two.

I think its gonna be a 3 way battle of who goes fm talk in philly

(1 95.7 there is talk in the new year greater media wants to do something with 95.7 and talk could be it

(2 96.5 would beasley want to re enter the talk format on 96.5 ?

(3 104.5/106.1 either station could flip it just comes down to wich station makes more coin for cc 104.5 or 106.1
