Which SF radio station should go defunct?

I think KMKY 1310 should go away who listenes to it anyway.

Disney seems to know what they're doing. Their stations are probably getting only a small audience of pre-teens, but they use Radio Disney to cross-promote other Disney products, including their films, their TV networks and shows, their 'tween heart-throb stars, the live concerts of their teen stars, etc, etc. My daughter always wanted to listen to 1310 when she was little, and out-grew it about age 10. She graduated to FM for about a minute (Wild 94.9), but dropped radio altogether for MP3s and the internet. If she and her friends are any indication, radio is in deep trouble.

But back to Radio Disney - I don't think it matters to Disney that the ratings are negligible. And since the programming originates in Burbank (or wherever) - nothing local - the individual stations are probably cheap to operate.

Actually, I listen to it. It has a preset on my car radio. KMKY is really the only hit music station in the Bay Area now. And heck, it even sounds like top 40 stations of old, except that the DJs are teenage girls rather than 20-something guys.

I understand why KMKY is at 1310 and not on FM. The owners don't want to buy 3 fm stations for one format in 1 market like KDFC and KUIC did. 2 its too costly.

Maybe there should be other stations that should go defunct but who?

Camping claims the world will end on May 21st. If it doesn't and he isn't raptured, he should turn in all of his licenses back to the FCC and give his followers their money back.

There may be few listeners, but the other question is what to change the format to? ESPN is about the only alternative, and the ESPN Radio affilation is split between 680 and 1050 here

Change to what? It seems to me that Radio Disney is a good example of the perfect use for a low powered AM frequency. It accomplishes Disney's purpose, and it uses a frequency that would otherwise be yet another religious station, or brokered-ethnic.

It's a marketing vehicle for all things Disney to pre-teens. It's valuable to them as that, and they couldn't care less about ratings. That's why Radio Disney kept a bunch of these stations when the parent company spun off the ABC stations like KGO & KSFO to Citadel.

Just for the content though right? I assume you change the station when Justin Bieber or Selena Gomez comes on?

Whenever I think of radio evangelists making lots of money pitching superstitious BS I can't help but be reminded of the scene of Jesus throwing the same pack of bums out of a temple, and that memorable quote about it being easier for camels to walk thru the eye of a needle than for rich people to enter the Kingdom of God, but that was just Jesus. Pitching superstitious BS is sooooo much more profitable!

No I listen to 1310 when it was KDIA before it went to 1640 AM.
