Which Sierra Vista station gets moved to Tucson?

In May, Cherry Creek Radio which owns KZMK-100.9 in Sierra Vista, filed an application with the FCC to move their community of license to Tanque Verde,AZ. If Tanque Verde exists, you get there by taking Tanque Verde Road eastbound just past the Tucson City Limits.
In September, Ted Tucker's companies asked the FCC to reject KZMK's proposal and instead allow KKYZ-101.7 to move from Sierra Vista to Tanque Verde. Tucker's proposal is much more complex. He already has FCC permission to move KKYZ to Corona De Tucson which lies on the South end of Houghton Road. That would move KKYZ from 101.7 to 101.3. Tucker also already has permission to move his Nogales station to Vail on 98.5. His new proposal is to put 101.3 in Tanque Verde, move 98.5 to Corona and place his Lordsburg station on 103.7 in Vail. Of course, Tanque Verde, Vail and Corona are Tucson in disguise. Why the FCC doesn't know that is another issue.

A few questions. How is it possible for the FCC to allow a station moving from Lordsburg to Vail?!? That has to be over 70 miles and over state lines. Certainly a huge stretch of the imagination. Are there ANY limits to this station moving business???

Second, if KKYZ is moved up toward Tucson and moves to 101.3, what does that do for KFMA's translator? Obviously they are not protected, so does Lotus lose the freq altogether or does it move to another, say 100.9? Last time I was down in Cochise County, KKYZ seemed to have a carrier on 101.3 as well. Is this all related?

I'm also baffled why Clear Channel hasn't used more lobbyist power and the Vail/98.5 app is still approved...wouldn't this murder 98.3 on the eastside?

Finally, it seems as if Cherry Creek is content where they are in Sierra Vista. A freelance engineer who is an acquaintance of mine was just brought in to the KTAN/KZMK/KWCD studios to do some tidying up. From what he tells me, those will remain Sierra Vista signals.

As long as it brings a little more variety to the Tucson FM dial, I am all for other stations moving into the Tucson market. As for CC, I could really care less about how it affects them. They are part of the reason that Tucson's FM dial is a wasteland. Bring One, Bring All.

KFMA's translator will be history.

Yes, a nearby station on 98.5 would convert Hot 98 FM into Luke-warm 98 FM.
Tucker's 98.5 was proposed a few years ago when 98.3 was owned by Art Laboe. Laboe filed an opposition but after Clear Channel took over, they lost interest in fighting Tucker. Two possibilities are that Clear will pay a king's ransom to Tucker and buy 98.5. Or more likely, there will be still another chanel swap. 98.5 disappears and a new station is proposed that will be a "first local service" for Pantano Wash.

Evidentially not. Your taxpayer-supported FCC will allow a station not only to travel 70 miles, but now 133 miles crossing state lines from The Dalles, Oregon market population 78,000, skipping the PORTLAND, OREGON metropoliton area to SEATTLE-TACOMA, population 3.4 million. (See docket 02-136). These Tuscan moves are part of an elaborate scheme for greedy radio operators to move closer to urbanized areas. In point of fact, the above allotment scheme (02-376) has more in common with the Seattle 40 million dollar move from Oregon than you would ever believe. And in this docket they argue that Davis-Monhan Air Force Base is a "community" deserving "first local service" preference. What a bunch of bull. It's smack in the middle of the Tuscan urbanized area! Since when is an air force base a community for allotment purposes? We here will not stand for this brazen manipulation of the rules. The FCC forgets that the airwaves and stations' are a public trustee, not ownership. I have had it and will not stand for this abuse any more!
