Which station will be first to flip format, WSJT or WMTX?

Hmmm....what's left for WSJT?

Jack/Bob/Dave? Would be cheap to run, but might encroach on Q105's territory.

Standards or Beautiful/EZ? Music for those who find The Dove "too spicy". Not sure the $$$ would be there.

Rhythmic Hits (a la Ft. Myers Z100)? Would have to be tailored for a younger demo than Q105, but might hurt Wild.

CHR (like "Amp")? No, as they could simply move Wild more in that direction if they thought it would fly.

I'd still lean toward some flavor of male-skewing Classic Rock, given how well the Eagle is doing (I'm also at a loss, MsMusic), and the fact that it would have limited impact on Q105.

My vote goes for talk. Ideally, local/live talk...

Which is great in theory, but everyone locally who could move the meter is under contract or dead.

Despite his best efforts and a pretty good show, WWBA never gained any traction despite having Mark Larsen as a local centerpiece.

CBS encountered the same sort of issue with sports on FM in Pittsburgh. They couldn't find anyone who can make a dent against the established local stars in AM and PM drive and they're pulling a 1-share.

Who's going to beat Jack & Tedd, MJ/Schnitt and Bubba in the morning?

Who's going to beat Schnitt/MJ, Duemig (don't pigeon-hole it as a sports audience, his men 25-54 numbers are a force) and Cowhead in the afternoon?

I'm sure your answer will be, "well, you have to find the right people" but I contend there may not be any "right people" out there unless you are willing to pay extravagantly and bring in a superstar from somewhere else.

you might wanna lump Jesse and Lauren in there since they have been the top 3 25-54 afternoon, if not #1, show now for quite sometime ;D

You are correct. That's exactly what I am saying. The payoff can be big for anyone who is willing to pony up the check book and hire the "right people" (as opposed to knowingly hiring the "wrong people") and make it happen. Whomever does this first in the market will take home the prize.

As for Larsen and others on WWBA, I have the highest respect for Larsen's talent. However, as good as he is, he was on an AM station. With WSJT, we're talking about an FM station now which makes a huge difference over an AM signal. I'm sure if Larsen is available, he would make a bigger dent in the Tampa Bay PPM on FM.

On the other hand, WSJT may do well by making the same, or similar, adjustments that sister station KTWV has made in Los Angeles which appears to be working for 94.7 L. A.

There are plenty of great hitters sitting on the bench in EVERY market. The day some GM's in this market grow a sac and take a chance...you will hear that. But not until then.

Great point.

And Ledge, if it were me, you'd be the first guy I called, believe me. You're exactly the kind of talent they'd need, with instant name recognition and a track record of success.

And my evaluation is based on current ownership conditions. I think a return to more independent ownership would raise the creative bar across the board, becuase stations wouldn't be playing "protect the mothership".

I think there's probably more displaced talent in the Bay than in a lot of places. The trick is to balance the talented out-of-the-box hires with someone who can be a draw.

You mean independents like Renda and Saul Frischling?

Hopefully someone better than those two.

The unfortunate "part 2" of consolidation was that for the most part, it was the good owners who sold out to the big guys, because their stations were the ones worth buying.

If the climate and/or rules ever change, some old owners or motivated new breed types may see some opportunity.

With all due respect, the numbers speak to speak to your programming skill - not those personalities listed, though its nice you gave them shout outs.

Interesting to note when they are on vacation or otherwise not on their shift, your station does just as well (if not better) than when they are present and accounted for - not something you see from true "personalities", although, sometimes the best talent is knowing when to shut up - something that L&T never learned to master.

Anyway, it will be doubly interesting to see how Snitt's guest host perform while he was on vacation 2 weeks ago.

WXJB 99.9 FM in Hernando puts in a decent signal, even in central Pinellas, with all-talk (Rush live, etc.). They became all-talk mid-July. If they are still 6 kW it's a good signal for that power.

whatever...We're held resposible when the numbers SUCK so I'm gonna speak up when the numbers are good ;D . Music is the star yes..but there are plenty of ways to drive off listeners in the PPM world.

Someone I know used to buy advertising on WLLD and got an invitation to attend a "client party" on Thursday night. The rumor is that it will be to announce to clients a new format on WSJT. It looks like the time has finally arrived for a format flip on that station. Is there anyone local left on that station who might be let go? I am hearing through the grapevine that Adult Top 40 will be the format they flip to. Anyone else have any insight?

August 31, 2010: Tampa Bay gets a new Hot AC, as CBS Radio flips WSJT to "Play 98.7." Orlando Davis, PD and morning personality on Rhythmic clustermate WLLD, takes the programming reins at the new Play, with the airstaff to be announced. The station is playing "today's best hits, without the rap," and core artists are Katy Perry, Train, John Mayer, and Maroon 5.

The new station site is up and streaming at www.play987.com, with social media already up and running at Facebook and Twitter.

"Play 98.7 will connect a number of great artists to their local fans and diversify CBS Radio's offerings in Tampa," CBS Radio/Tampa SVP/Market Manager Don Howe said. "The station will provide the Tampa Bay Area with a great radio experience along with an integrated and interactive platform for adult CHR music and its fans to be heard."

WSJT's former Smooth Jazz programming can now be heard at the HD2 subchannel or online at www.wsjt.com, CBS Radio's www.radio.com, AOL Radio, or Yahoo Music.

Do corporate radio people have any brains. Just what the area needs...another HOT AC format...thank God I have XM radio...at least there I can hear SMOOTH COMTEMPORARY JAZZ. And they wonder where the advertising dollars are being spent. Not everyone is under 40.
