It has been relatively quiet on this board compared to the past....

Anyone knows which station will flip next?

Anyone knows what the format will be when KOIT 1260AM is officially taken over by the new company?

considering koit is once again top 5, and still a huge billing station it will most likely not be changing.
how many times do we need to explain this? companies dont change money making stations. especially when they are consistently top 5 in the market.

Uh, Leeanne, you need to read the fine print. The question station in question is KOIT-AM, which WILL CHANGE FORMAT since it's been sold to a c
Catholic non-profit organization. The sale hasn't closed yet but here's the new owner:

Talking about the am side not the fm, my guess religious on the am (not a hard one to guess about) KOIT fm may sound bland with a small music rotation but it always stays north on the charts with the ratings why change something that makes money.

oh sorry my bad,
so used to dealing with idiots i'm starting to become one...

The FCC has already approved the license transfer from Bonneville to Immaculate Heart, back on July 16. It may be only a matter of days (or hours) until the switch is made...

Immaculate Heart, IHR Broadcasting will not move with any speed on the closing for KIOT-AM. A contract had been signed for an LMA operation in the interim. However after filing the transfer papers with the FCC, IHR decided that there was not any benefit to spend time and resources on an LMA and therfore the parties agreed not to do so.

Bonneville can simulcast KOIT-FM for long as needed and their only cost is the power bill, insurance and other costs related to KOIT-AM only. Bonneville's main concern is receiving the 14 million at closing and an LMA was not that important to them.

This is a major acquization for IHR which involves part paid in capital and part bank financing so there is some work to be done prior to closing. My best guess for closing is September or October.

The format will be the Catholic Radio programs which partly originate from Sacramento.

KOIT-AM does have a couple of good things going for them and one is the audio processing with the AM Optimod that gives it the base response. The other is the tall tower and the folded unipole antenna. The transmitter power sees a wider tower and along with the height it really has a good punch to its sound.

I still have 1260 khz. set on my car radios and sometimes when they play a good Four Tops song or another oldie, I turn it up and think that the origional KYA is back along with personality radio that has been missing in San Francisco for so long. Then they play a down tempo AC hit and I realize that it is only a fantasy.

Interesting prediction. Has that been Immaculate Heart's modus at the other stations they operate?

(Removing tongue from cheek.)

Meanwhile, Adult Standards and a Sports alternative to KNBR are possibilities on the AM dial. Adult Standards would be a nice niche for KTRB/860 (hey, those KABL call letters are available!) -- but Pappas Radio is contractually committed to the current Talk format until next March.

For Sports, there are enough guys available (or quasi-available) -- Bruce MacGowan, John Shrader, Kevin Radich, Ray Woodson and Dave Lewis, for example -- to build around, if somebody wanted to take a chance, particularly in the Southbay.

Maybe KDFC should bring back the old "Drive" format. I remember listening to it when it
was on 95.7 FM. Love that Classic Rock Hits format!!!!

Agreed. KDFC performs very well for a Classical format, albeit mostly upper end, demo wise.

The question about Koit's AM will be how losing the similcast will effect the FM's ranking, 25-54. Currently, they are able to combine ratings from the 2 stations. Koit will lose that advantage when the AM goes to "heaven."

Newsperson,, your last post is exactly the way i see it,, Its happened to me too,, I will be driving around and tune into 1260, and hear some old Motown, and remember how real radio was on 1260 KYA, and what radio means now!! Im sure when KFRC 106.9 flips in the next twenty years, I wouldnt tune in to see whats on!! Its a shame that Chris Edwards or Verne White couldnt have taken 1260 back to KYA, If so KFRC wouldnt have a chance with their 99.7 % jingle/ always VO radio!! KYA would have taken over, The KYA internet radio if it was possible to get in my car I could cancel XM!! No baseball , and a much better format on KYA,,, and jingles that you can relate to. XM & Newsperson,

I can get as nostalgic as the next guy - I'd like to return to the heyday of 610/KFRC and 1260/KYA. My second radio wish is to have the early rock FM stations back - KSAN and KMPX. But I'd also like to be 25 again, and have all my hair back. None of it is going to happen.

The wish that either the real Chris Edwards or the fake Chris Edwards would return KYA to it's glory days was only a pipe-dream. Even if it had happened, it would never have lasted - it would have bled money until it died. Music on AM has been dead for 2 decades. 1260 might have good audio processing, but it's still low fidelity monaural, and that's about as appealing to most people as a 65 Rambler American. 1260 is going to religious programming because religion, talk, and sports are the only formats that are viable on AM anymore.

I like to think positively. The bright side of hair loss is the $20 per month I've saved that I would have spent on haircuts over the last 20 years - that's almost $5,000! As for the bright side of current Bay Area music radio...can't think of one.
