which stations are these?

On saturday night I was sitting in my car in Parma between 8:00-8:15 and was doing a little DXing. This is what I heard, and I was wondering if somebody could tell me what stations these might be.

93.5 oldies
93.9 mix/hac
96.1 country
96.9 talk/news
97.1 college? (heard an unusual form of rock)
97.9 urban
98.9 classic rock/oldies
99.1 car racing (busch series/nascar)
103.5 ac
106.1 oldies

These stations I could identify.
88.7 alternative CIMX Windsor/Detroit
94.5 classic rock WXKR Port Clinton
101.1 rock WRIF Detroit, MI
100.3 ac WNIC Dearborn, MI
102.7 hac WCPZ Sandusky
102.9 classic rock WYFM Sharon, PA

Wow...let's see...93.9 could have been the ac out of Winsor, Canada (I don't know their calls. They tend to lean hot ac) 96.1 would be WKFM licensed to Huron, Ohio...Also out that way there's a 96.9 Religious station...could have been them, they carry some religious talk programs from time to time. They may be licensed to either Willard or Castalia, IIRC. 99.1 might have been WFRO out of Fremont, Ohio. I don't think they carry NASCAR but they do cover races at the local raceway/speedway... If it was definately NASCAR or Busch Series that you heard, then it's not "the fro".
This is a long shot, but 106.1 might have been Mix 106 out of Mansfield. They usually are soft ac but mix in some oldies once or twice and hour...their signal carries...just don't know if it carries THAT much...
Hope that helps a little. Sorry I couldn't be a little more specific.

There's a Christian broadcaster that used to be on there. Dunno if that was it.
It might also be a CBC signal (Canadian Broadcasting Corp)
> 97.1 college? (heard an unusual form of rock)
There's Hot AC WBNS-FM in Columbus. Might be it. I regularly DX-ed 97.1 about 10 years ago when it was a GREAT oldies station. But they changed the signal pattern, so I hardly get it at all anymore.

98.9 could have been Mix 98.9 out of Youngstown. Same with 106.1, could have been the oldies station out of Y-Town.

97.1 and 96.9, and 106.1

> 97.1 college? (heard an unusual form of rock)

This sounds like hot talker WKRK/Detroit, which just so happens to have a show featuring local rock music on Saturday nights:

http://www.wkrk.com/sectional.asp?id=4352

"Radio Fever...

Comin' out your radio. Those two wacky guys from the neighborhood take you into the world of local rock jams. Sassy and the Wolf, a.k.a Chris and Greg, serve up hottness and hilarity every Saturday night from 8 to 11."

The 96.9 was probably religious WLRD/Willard, since you seemed to be getting a lot of stuff out of that direction. And I'm guessing 106.1 was more likely WVNO/Mansfield as opposed to Youngstown's WBBG/Niles...

I got this loud and clear Saturday night in Westlake.

I forgot 96.3

I forgot 96.3 which was playing an 80's rock song.

Probably WLVQ-FM "Q-FM 96" Columbus. Rock station owned by Infinity.

Re: I forgot 96.3

Doubt it, he seemed to have been getting a lot of Detroit signals in.

That was probably WDVD/96.3, a Hot/Modern-ish AC out of Detroit. I can get them in sometimes regularly when on the westside.

99.1 could be "froggie 99" in Parkersburg. Usually the races are on sister station WADC /1050, but sometimes they run the races on 99.1

The 96.9 is probably Willard, ohio, a christian station.

Here are my educated guesses..

> 93.5 oldies
WRQN Bowling Green (Toledo)
> 93.9 mix/hac
CIDR Windsor, Ont. (the former CKLW-FM)
> 96.1 country
WKFM Huron
> 96.9 talk/news
Closest stations on 96.9 are WNKL Wauseon (Toledo) and WLRD Willard. Both are Christian stations, but could have been running some sort of talk program. Could also have been soumething out of Canada.
> 97.1 college? (heard an unusual form of rock)
Usually, you can pick up WREO-FM out of Ashtabula in Cleveland. Format is AC, but they sometimes play some off-the-wall selections. Other close-in stations on the frequency are WBNS-FM Columbus and WKRK Detroit. WKRK is mostly hot talk but some of the other Infinity hot-talkers mix in some rock 'n roll weekends and evenings.
> 97.9 urban
WJLB Detroit
> 98.9 classic rock/oldies
Closest is WMXY Youngstown. They're AC, but may have played something of that genre. Otherwise, I'd suspect something out of Ontario.
> 99.1 car racing (busch series/nascar)
WFRO-FM Freemont
> 103.5 ac
You got me here... I'd blame the Canadians.
> 106.1 oldies
Could either be WBBG Niles-Youngstown (oldies) or WVNO Mansfield (gold-based AC)

In general, when the FM band is experiencing a lot of tropo-scatter, usually on hot humid summer days when there is a temperature inversion, stations to the north seem to come in better than from the south. This may be due to some sort of Lake-induced weather phenomena. I'm generally much more likely to pull in stations from Detroit, London, Ont., Toledo, and Buffalo than from Columbus or Pittsburgh, even though as close as or closer than some of those cities.

I had stations from Columbus on east, all along the I-70 corridor, blasting in last night.
I'd guess they are stronger from the north due to Lake Erie and there is nothing there to happer or mess with the signal

Me too...

I was listening to my clock radio last night trying to go to sleep when I wasn't getting the usual 95.5 WFHM Cleveland. Then I explored my radio to find many Cleveland stations (many locals for me) were either getting tromped on or absent all together:

95.5 was non-existent
96.5 was getting beat on by WLVQ 96.3 Columbus
99.5 was weak
105.7 was non-existent
107.3 was fuzzy
107.9 not there
104.1 not there
103.3 fuzzy
102.1 I think was overpowered by some other, hotter sounding station
93.1 was okay at best
But the biggest surprise was 100.7 WMMS completely overridden by 100.7 WEEC Springfield!

Meanwhile, I was getting lots of Columbus (92.3, 93.3, 94.7, 96.3, 97.1, 97.9 (killing local 98.1 WKDD), 99.7, 100.3 (Newark), 101.1 fuzzy, 103.1, 103.5, 103.9, 104.9, 106.3, 107.1, 107.5, and ch. 6 audio 87.7).

I also got some Zanesville (102.5, 105.9, 92.7).

Finally, some other stations:
89.1 maybe AFR
89.5 NPR type programming (matched WKSU stations)
92.9 smooth jazz or lite rock (maybe WLTJ Pittsburgh)
93.5 Indians game (I think WBNV Barnesville)
93.9 "Today's best music, and best of the 80s" ??
94.3 Mix from Marion?
95.7 (Pretty sure it was WDPT Piqua/Dayton)
96.9 WRRK Braddock/Pittsburgh
97.3 unknown, don't remember what type of music
99.1 country, mentioned Marietta (guess WGGE Parkersburg, WV)
100.1 playing oldies type music (Mansfield or Marietta?)
101.5 IDed as "The River" very strong signal
103.7 country (WCKY Tiffin ??)
105.5 couldn't tell if it was oldies or country, ??
106.7 rock, played Whitesnake and Seger ??

Any help on the un-IDed stations would be appreciated.

I find it so neat when the atmosphere screws up the dial. And I just use my shelf stereo!

Could have been HAC WKWK Wheeling, or Hip-hop WJZE Toledo (not sure if they changed calls yet)

WRVF Toledo

WUKL Wheeling, oldies

> 106.7 rock, played Whitesnake and Seger ??

WDTW Detriot. The Drive, more than likely

Re: Me too...

There are two "Rivers" on 101.5, one in Toledo, one in West Virginia.
______________
