Which would generate more revenue a liberal talk station or a true alt station

Here in louisville that is. The majority of you have said if liberal talk radio would make money in louisville they would build one but with alt stations all n all not doing to well except here where they seem to never do well i would say its a toin coss. When i say alt i mean something along the lines of wswd in cinci or radio 104.3 in philly or even kroq in los angeles.(Louisville has not had a commercial alt station in years.LRS flipped to active rock on 105.1 four or five years ago)

Opinions please just wanting to start people talking a bit been a bit quiet on the kentucky board lately.

Hotp out ;D

Re: Which would generate more revenue a liberal talk station or a true alt stati

Liberal talk is going down in flames, what do you mean by "alternate" talk?

No matter what format, find the best sales hauncho that can sell even without ratings... A person that can be a 'street promoter-fighter-public service-face' all rolled up into ONE talent... You'd have to pay that person 'dearly', but you'd ge return (unless your a highly directional AM or even DA-FM with only 60dbu covering the industrial side of town)... 8)

If Liberal talk would work here 1570 would've tried it instead of what they're doing.

Re: Which would generate more revenue a liberal talk station or a true alt stati

Twenty years ago Rush along with Ed McLaughlin's packaging reinvented talk radio. But the real factor is the difference between a Liberal and Conservative listener. A person with liberal views has little use for an individual pontificating and barking out orders (read:Operation Kaos). Instead they prefer in depth coverage and discussion. So even if you found that perfect liberal host who makes Rush and all the rest seem dated and out of touch, liberal talk would still have challenges for success. Just an opinion, YMMV

Re: Which would generate more revenue a liberal talk station or a true alt stati

Good points all of you but still we being the industry do have two very talented liberal talk show hosts ed schultz and stephanie miller ed is the liberal version of rush and steph is very funny and they make a success of liberal talk radio. They have both been on for several years so they have to be doing it right. Ed has beaten hannity in some markets where they have gone head to head.

I still would prefer an alternative station and truth be told talk radio bores me after a few mintues even if i do agree with what they are saying.

Liberal talk can work if its done right, and thats the most important thing. I think what Bonneville is doing with WWWT is different and exciting all together. I like the slogan "To The Left..To The Right"

Skipper said it right, you have to go sell the story, not the 1.3 share. That will get you every time.

If they were to do LibTalk in town, it shouldn't be 100% Air America. I do feel that Bennett will do a great job running the ship, but it should be a local mix of interesting personalities, top of the line interviews, Hardball style local programming and hard hitting top talent (Ed Shultz, Stephanie Miller).

Louisville has too much talk programming right now.

In the early 90s 790 wwky a decent talk station did have both left and right but that was when louisville radio was adventurous to some degree.

Yep you got it then after alan colmes you had barry farber and in the morning lee meribald a personal advice show and also you had in 1995 dr fox on from 4-7 and i also remember this was more like 1997 you had john and ken on overnight they now do 3-7 on kfi in los angeles. And in the mornings on wwky you had denton randall. Its very sad what has happened to louisville radio over the years
