WHIL Mobile

Where did you get that info from? I'm not doubting the accuracy of it, just curious. Spring Hill has had the station just over 30 years now (it came on about the time of Hurricane Frederic). The school has always provided studio space, but from what I have been told (I'm an alum), the school does not provide any funding - it has to be raised from radio-thons and the like. Started with a 200 ft tower on the campus, and later moved up to the old TV5 tower in Spanish Fort.
Mobile has always been a great place for fans of public radio: Mississippi Public Bcstg's 90.3 xmtr (Biloxi) and Pensacola's WUWF 88.1 are both there as alternatives if you don't like what's on WHIL at the moment.

I didn't realize WUWF was an option in Mobile at all. It's almost too weak to listen in analog here in Foley and the HD is sporadic at best (and doesn't decode at all on one of my HD radios, even at the tower site.)
Personally I would love to have the APR schedule available down here off the air. I liked their selection of music and speech programming better than the mostly classical approach WHIL seems to take. But classical fans are a vocal and loyal bunch, so it would definitely make some folks angry to go mucking about with WHIL.
On the plus side, maybe they'd add an HD feed to shuffle the classic off to a subchannel and bring in the BBC World Service on an HD-3 or something. When I first moved down here I wrote to WHIL sort of tongue in cheek about plans to add HD and they said they'd be happy to if I donated the $200k+ to make it happen.
Since I'm too far to hear MPB and WUWF is generally too weak on my radios and the HD isn't reliable, I just took the third option, which is I never listen to public radio (or donate) anymore.

Looking at the schedules of WHIL and WUAL, they aren't so much different. It'll be interesting to see if they manage to keep the Mobile-centric programming like Mobile Matters and Alabama Arts Radio. On the other hand, I'll be excited to get On The Media, Bama Bluegrass, Jugs Juke & Jazz and BBC World Service at night.
Everything else seems to be pretty much the same. APR has some overlap with WUWF in that they carry The World, Fresh Air and Marketplace (at 5pm) during the week.

Maybe that explains why WUWF dropped Exponential Radio from their HD-2 and replaced it with Classical.
Personally, I'd be a little more excited if they were joining Troy's "Southeastern Public Radio" network... but for all I know, Bama will buy those three stations next to form a statewide network like Georgia and Mississippi have. Gotta cut costs somewhere.
