While biting my tongue almost completely off.......

A group of us have picked dates for when Marv will be moved or released to "pursue other opportunities."
I have July 26th.

Emmis continues to make one mistake after another. Take a look their latest version of Jammin' Oldies in LA.
Rick Cummings must be drinking heavy.

The sad thing is that Arbitron failed miserably tracking the actual listening of the rock demo. The only 18-34 males willing to fill out a damn diary were the poofs watching American Idol. Take a look at Philly. Young men were always listening. It was the methodology that failed, not the stations. I can make a long list of talented pros that were shoved through the Q101 meatgrinder without being able to overcompensate for the weaknesses of the Arbitron system. How many millions of dollars have broadcasters paid Arbitron to screw them over.

What a shame. It's time to punt Arbitron and adopt the smart phone system as soon as possible.

Your thoughts?

Your thoughts?

Yes, one thought.

Be careful of overgeneralizing from the results of a limited amount of PPM data from one rated market.

You may have drawn the right conclusion -- or not.

The old way: 1950's technology.
Call people, offer a buck or two to keep a weekly paper diary of their listening. Have them mail it back.
Result: Skewed reports. Minority diaries filled out with rediculous amounts of time spent listening. Affluent and educated audiences block the calls and are under reported.

The PPM way: 1980's technology. (Now in Philly, testing in Houston)
Call less people. offer to pay them to wear what looks like an old beeper. It tracks actual exposure and electronically tallies the results.
If you forget the beeper at home.... so what?

The next way: 2000 technology: (Now only in Europe... coming 2008)
You agree to have your phone pick up the signals and report back. They send you a check or visa card. You forget your phone at home, you go get it.

Savey?

If what you say is true, and I have no reason not to believe you, then this is indeed a skewed system. Why would the radio stations rely on such a flawed process? I don't know for sure, but I am willing to guess that stations shell out a lot of dough for these Arbitron numbers. Why don't the stations put pressure on Arbitron to create a more accurate method for generating results. As you can tell, I am a rookie when it comes to the ins and outs of radio strategy, but I am amazed at the various facets and decisions that make up radio programming.

Sigh. I hardly know where to begin.

Let me skip over the misstatements and exaggerations of the first two parts. That discussion probably belongs elsewhere, not here.

Would you care to share with us [a] which company provides this, what the cost is to radio stations, and [c] how long until the MRC gives full accreditation?

Thanks.
