WHEN THE KIDS ARE AWAY THE DINOSAURS COME OUT TO PLAY....FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW
Music business legends will roam the halls of WSUM (91.7), the Madison Student Radio station again on Tuesday, January 15, as the old guys take over for the kids. UW alum Bruce Ravid, ’74 will host an 8-hour broadcast on the student station with the help of Madison radio veterans Tom Teuber, Rick Murphy and Dave Benson. Other guests scheduled to appear include Doug Feiger, lead singer of legendary 80’s band The Knack, Steve Sinton, one of the founders of Air America Radio and L.A. radio veteran Uncle Joe Benson, whose early FM days were spent at Milwaukee ’s legendary WZMF and WQFM..
WSUM remains on the air even though the Spring semester doesn’t start for a couple of weeks. Last year, to make up for being short-handed during this period, WSUM Station Manager Dave Black invited Ravid to fill a day’s worth of programming, and he happily accepted. Reaction was positive, so the event will be repeated again on January 15.
Ravid began his music industry career at what was then a closed circuit station on the UW campus. He went on to be a Promotions Executive with Capitol Records, and moved over to the talent side in the A&R Dept where, among other things, he signed The Knack to their Capitol Records contract ( Yes, we have Bruce Ravid to thank for “My Sharona.”) He also helped guide the recording careers of Iron Maiden, Duran Duran, Missing Persons, The Motels, Thomas Dolby and Weird Al Yankovic.
Ravid now runs an executive search firm in Los Angeles specializing in the IT industry, but he has kept his ties to the music industry and to the UW...endowing a chair in the trumpet section of the UW Marching Band and supporting WSUM, which gives an annual award to an outstanding student staff member in his name. His monthly indie rock webcast, Go Deep, can be heard at http://www.ravesraves.com/
During his years at Capitol, Ravid developed relationships with radio programmers all over the country, many of which have continued to this day. Many of those radio folks got their start in college radio, so it was only natural to invite some to participate in Tuesday’s broadcast.
Murphy, currently a talk show host on WIBA, programmed Radio Free Madison on the old WIBA-FM in the 70’s as did Dave Benson, who is now at KFOG in San Francisco. Teuber served as Program Director of WMMM (105.5 Triple M) as well as the old WMAD in the late 80’s in addition to programming stints in Chicago, Columbus, OH and Rochester, NY. Uncle Joe Benson currently does afternoons on 95.5 KLOS in Los Angeles.
Other guests scheduled to sit in with Ravid include Steve Meyer, a former label executive who is President of Smart Marketing and author of the weekly newsletter Disc @ DAT, and DJ Paul V of Indie 103.1 in Los Angeles.
Bruce Ravid will host Tuesday’s broadcast from 10am to 6pm and will be joined from 3-6pm by Joe Benson, Teuber, Murphy, Dave Benson and Sinton.. WSUM can be heard on FM in Madison at 91.7 and worldwide on the Internet at www.wsum.org
