So over the "hiatus" I and apparently a lot of other public radio donors ended up getting an e-mail survey asking for our thoughts on the PRI/BBC co-production "The World" and our feelings on the current show format.

I myself made my feelings clear that while I appreciate the focus on world news, I could do without the focus on arts and culture of foreign countries and a much, much heavier focus on "hard news."

I don't care about a 14-year old girl who fled Algeria because her love of banjo music angered Muslim extremists, or how a sports bar in Finland has really great hamburgers.
 
I have never found The World very listenable. I'm not sure what exactly it is about the program, but I usually find it very dry and boring. It just doesn't feel relevant to me in the way other pubradio does.
 
"The World" is OK I suppose. I listen occasionally and to me it's more like "Outlook" on BBC World Service than anything else.

Since I think that there is a dearth of hard news in America, I can understand wanting "The World" to be more hard news. I suppose that also makes an argument for public radio stations to consider picking up the later BBC World Service "NewsHour" broadcast. However since that airs at 4pm eastern time, those public stations that are NPR affiliates would be obligated to air "All Things Considered"

"The World" is OK for its intended audience.
 
Apparently the donors in Houston don't find "The World" very listenable either. As of August, KUHF is dropping it in favor of a same-day repeat of their midday call-in show "Houston Matters."
