WHIO 75th anniversary

I missed it since I was at work.

Were there any airchecks or other audioclips of Lou Emm?

Who is the WHIO announcer who co-hosted Emm's morning show in the 80s?
I still hear his voice on commercials and announcements on WHIO-TV.

Joe Waldeman worked with Lou Emm as co-host. Joe had previously worked at 610/TVN (afternoons). His stint with Lou was his second round of employment with WHIO. I never listen to them now. Horrible morning show and it takes them about 10 minutes just to say the call lettters and slogan and they repeat it way too often for anyone to feel comfortable listening. The station is nothing but 24 hours of call letters/slogan hype.

I'm with you! I remember listening to WHIO-AM as a kid and even tuning in to hear Lou Emm occasionally. I even remember calling into Larry Hansgen's sports show as a kid and talking to the late wrestling manager "Classy" Freddie Blassie. Now its evolved into nothing but right-wing blowhard talk shows. Sad. :'(

I didn't realize Joe passed away.

I remember his Insight series of historical presentations on WTVN back in the 60's.

Jim Jones is the voice you hear frequently on WHIO-TV: http://www.cherryvoiceworks.com/

Listened to the Jim Jones audiclip for WPTD/WPTO on his website..his voice on that clip is comparatively mellower than the gutsy and booming on-air delivery used on WHIO's Newscenter 7 liners..I almost thought they were two different individuals for a moment.

They are two different guys. One is the station imaging voice and Jim is the local hired gun who handles what ever it is they need done at that moment. You can hear Jim in a ton of spots and some promo. I am pretty sure Bill Ratner (http://www.billratner.com/) is the primary station voice.

So you liked it better when it had a 3 share. That's interesting. Funny how it's number 1 when it sucks, but back when they were doing everything right their ratings weren't as good.

This is such a hard business to figure out. Thank God we can come here for such cutting edge analysis. :D

Greg Hahn,

Let me correct you on a few points. I never liked them regardless of share although I did enjoy the CBS Radio Mystery Theatre. Secondly, at what point did they have a 3 share (just curious).

I recall the 70's and 80's when both WHIO AM 1290 (Full Service AM) and WHIO 99.1 (Beautiful Music) were well into double digits independant of each other.

As for today's "no 1 "....are not those ratings based on an AM/FM simullcast. Where would the station be on one signal. Now that's the question.

Well if you didn't like them back then either, what good is it to complain that you "never listen to them now"? From what you're saying it seems to me you've never been a fan of the station.

As to when those ratings were in the tank, from what I've gathered from staff members it was the pre- Rush days. I confess I made up the part about a 3 share, but old timers there will tell you the ratings at some point back in the day left a lot to be desired.

Finally, are not your comments based solely on the quality of the WHIO programming? You said that the delivery and frequency of the call letters and slogan was too much "for anyone to feel comfortable listening."

If that were true, the addition of the FM wouldn't have helped much. So the bottom line, which is totally contrary to your original post, is that people listen to WHIO because they like it.

No complaints here, almost always wake up to the morning news about every day and appreciate the news coverage especially in emergencies.

They do have an annoyingly long name and they do repeat it too much.

Greg,

The comment made regarding simulcasting is a reflection on how well the station is doing today. You said the station is #1 and I'm simply stating that as a stand alone WHIO 1290 would not be #1. By the way, last time I checked - they were not #1. So where are you getting your ratings and what demo are you looking at.

As for my opinion of the station...it's simply that...an opinion. They SUCK...and they are owned by COX and that pretty much says it all. How long have you been a board op Greg?

Greg,

BTW...according to the Fall/2009 Arbitron ratings...WHKO is #1 followed by WLTQ at #2 and then WHIO (*simulcast) as #3. Take out the numbers for the FM signal and you'll see where they really stand.

I guess you could say I've been a board op for 37 years or so. Thanks for asking.

And if you want to continue to argue that WHIO's ratings are in the tank when they are only .5 share out of first in the fall book, be my guest. It makes you look foolish rather than supporting your point.

I don't have immediate access to anything other than 12+, which is apparently what you're using. Good enough for this discussion.

And back to the simulcast issue: adding the FM allowed 5000 watt WHIO-AM to reduce the signal advantage held by HKO and LTQ. All it did was level the playing field and allow programming to be the deciding factor.

And WHIO was number 1 in two of the last three books.

Ratcis (or whatever your name is):

Obviously, you don't like Cox. Fine...that's your opinion. Maybe you got fired from there at some point, or perhaps you just don't like the fact that it's a corporation. There's a lot of people like that out there on these boards. Or perhaps you work for a competitor. Or, maybe not. I don't know...and I don't care, but tough. Cox is successful...all over the country. If you were right...they wouldn't be.

Because I am a party in question here, I'm not going to argue your personal opinion, because you are entitled to it. I'll just say if you were right, the stations wouldn't have the ratings they have. Some argue about the name repetition. Well...have you ever listened to 1010/WINS in New York, who says their name about 115 times an hour? Do you ever notice how many times the words "Dayton Daily News" appears on a page of the newspaper? Same reason WHIO repeats its name. If you don't get it...think about it. If you still don't get it...give up.

WHIO-AM could not be #1 these days as a standalone in any format. Fewer and fewer people are listening to AM and the band is growing older every day. The addition of FM, as Greg noted allowed the station to broaden it's reach and lower it's demos...and it has been successful doing both. It's reached #1 in 2 of the past 3 rating books - the latest, not too surprising given the Christmas season when listening to all of radio goes screwy.

Oh yeah...Greg ain't a board op, by the way. He's a long time company engineer who knows a heck of a lot more about Cox...and broadcasting...than you do. Or likely ever will.

I've had my say...and will say no more.
