WHIO loses Boortz to retirement

WHIO and all the other Neil Boortz stations are losing "The Talkmaster" to retirement on inaugurqtion day 2013. Herman Cain gets the gig with Boortz serving as his primary fill-in guy. Interesting dilema: If a station decides NOT to go with Herman Cain, will Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and the like show up and protest that "The black guy isn't getting a fair shake"? ;) Yeah, like THAT'S gonna happen!

Wth Herman Cain replacing Boortz in syndication, His show might be a good fit for either 1160 or 55KRC in Cincinnati.

Funny you should mention that. If you'll recall, 1160 started out with Boortz but no one in the market really knew who he was and folks kept confusing him with the local people with the same last name.

I said to someone that if we had stuck with Boortz, we'd have gotten Cain by default, who i think is way more entertaining than Boortz. Now, Boortz says in place until next January and a lot can happen between now and then.

Herman Cain used to have an evening program in Atlanta on WSB, which was widely heard in these parts. He had to quit it to run for President. He was, indeed, very entertaining, humorous and enlightening.

I've been lurking over on the atlanta board, it seems some people are not convinced that Herman Cain will be successful as Boortz in syndication. I can't say if He will or not since I have never listened to his show at night.

Given Cain's responses to questions asked of him during the campaign and his responses I don't think he will do well.

Being a boss of a big corporation is nothing like taking calls from and informing the public...and making it interesting.

Is the radio host universe this small now? Sad.

If I'm not mistaken, Cain had his own show on WSB before he resigned to run for President. He's filled in for Boortz in the past. I think he'll do well. He tells it like it he sees it.

Yes to all.

Boortz's base is very much the southeast. I haven't gone through the affiliate list, but I'd suspect over 75% of his 200-some affiliates are south of the Mason-Dixon line.

WHIO has him, of course, since it's owned by Cox.

With the presidential run, Herman Cain certainly has a much higher national profile (particularly outside the southeast) than Neal Boortz.

Whether that translates to a successful nationally syndicated talk radio show is hard to say, but a lot of program directors will like that name recognition. I can hear the "9...9...9" promos already.

When Boortz starts retirement,I will tune-in elsewhere.Morning talk radio will not be the same without him.Best wishes to Neal and his wife!
