Whip moves to mornings on 105.3 The Buzz

Whip has moved from afternoons to mornings (6am - 10am) on 105.3 The Buzz. I'm not sure who will be taking over afternoons (if it was said on-air earlier, I missed it). Aly is still on Middays. I've heard it won't be long until the Buzz has a full onair staff.

Which is nice, since they've been on the air for 5 months now.

"Whip"---WOW, with an air name like that, he must be REBELLIOUS...with X-TREME attitude. He must be more OUTRAGEOUS and TOTALLY AWESOME than anything on any other radio station in the universe.

Looks like "THE BUZZ" has done some research... and whatever 49 year old Armani-clad consultant they are using these days has informed them that the name "Whip" sucessfully conjures up images of skateboards, X-boxes, snowboarding, and teen rebellion to go along with their Blink-182 and Good Charlotte! AWESOME.

To me, nothing is as EXTREME and/or KICK ASS as demographic focus-group research and marketing...as I, too, am rebellious and filled with angst.

A name as OUTRAGEOUS and HARDCORE as "Whip" grabs me by the gonads and forces me to listen to him on the air for long periods of time, and then it makes me irresistably compelled to enter 105.3 in my Arbitron diary!

KICK ASS!

I kind of wonder what the goal of this station is...it's a frequency with no heritage and a target demo which is less likely to "shop" and more likely to "shoplift." This is the demo 99x apparently doesnt want anymore. And it's not like 99x is the enviable target it was 5 years ago, in any case.

Give them credit for putting together a live air-staff and a proven PD but does a 1 share in a 12-24 demo even come close to paying the bills?

Maybe it does, but I'm skeptical.

Current Buzz PD (and former 99X PD) Chris Williams now doing afternoons

Chris Williams, Buzz PD and former 99X PD, is now the afternoon jock at the Buzz. The station is also seeking a night-time jock. The Buzz will remain a music-centric station and provide plenty of tunes in the mornings to counter the gab on 99X and 96rock. (Similar to the approach the Beat takes vs. Q100, Star, V-103 and Hot in the mornings)

Nice to see 4 jocks on the station now. While I like stations to be music-centric, I think the Buzz really needs to add in a lot more songs to successfully pull that off. I was really hoping they'd bring back Dank to the station...so much for that. I'm liking Chris thus far, I had wondered if maybe we would be hearing him on air.

Good points. It is cool to see an all live air-staff (excluding syndicated programs). I wish them the best of luck, I certainly prefer it to 99X but was surprised it didn't take off in ratings a little more than what it has. I think they should have kept the music closer to what it was on 96.7 (mostly all new). We'll see what happens...

FYI - John has used the name Whip for years. His name was not made up by Clear Channel. I like Whip. I still can't believe they fired him at 99x and replaced him with Dekker. Dekker is unbearable to listen to.

I respect the fact that he's TRYING to do a good job. I believe, eventually, he will. It's damn nice to see someone who is obviously passionate about radio (and, sadly, his own ego-- but that's never stopped many other people from being very good) on the air.

That said, I can't listen to him. I cringe when he tries to be funny, and I think, currently, his wit could fit into a matchbox, without taking the matches out first. I'm under the impression he's trying to be someone else. Maybe he's emulating that person (someone he heard growing up?) and, to my ears, it doesn't fit.

When he settles down-- finds out who he is as a jock-- it could really be good.

I wish him the best of luck.

I never heard why he got fired. What happened?

Whip is pretty funny. give him time. he use to be in Houston for almost 5 years and got a great following and ratings. we still miss the guy.

I can't believe he is going to get up at 4:30 to do morning radio. so much for seeing those late night concerts. (or will those become all-nighters?)
______________

Let's give them a shot. It's a proven fact that the Atlanta radio audience doesn't take to change, and or anything new quickly. A couple of more books, and then I'll start to get skeptical. Different audience, but I'm taking the same approach with Dave-Fm.
______________
