White Paper: 5.1 Surround And The FM-Stereo Environment

F

Surround is the Killer App for HDFM broadcasting. Based upon the tremendous response at NAB2005, it is clear that more and more people are becoming convinced that FM radio has the potential to take a major step forward with this tech.

As of this writing, there are four proposed methods for surround broadcasting. They can be divided into two categories: the three matrix systems and the MPEG Spatial system. This paper will point out some critical technical issues that broadcasters must be aware of as they consider surround, lest they degrade and damage their FM-Stereo service.

I was looking at a new car and one of the features was "5.1 surround sound". The rep went on and on and on about it....then he played a "normal CD" followed by a "5.1 surround sound DVD".

Now, you may or may not know from my posts that I overly obsess about audio quality and processing. I would know the difference between simple left/right compared to all the added crap from 5.1 surround. Guess what Sammy heard with the amazing "5.1 surround sound"? Not a damn thing.

Purely a buzz word. WNNK-FM in my area is HDFM and you can definitely hear that...but I sincerely doubt the average joe would be able to discern between basic stereo and "5.1 surround".

Based upon your post, it sounds like you were not able to experience good 5.1 surround. Was the demo done with the same content recorded in stereo and 5.1?

I've done more than 1000 demonstrations of Surround for FM, and listeners were blown away. I need to qualify this by saying that the subjects were both casual listeners, as well as those closer to the broadcasting and music producing business.

I hope to have the opportunity to demonstrate this tech for you.

Also, this was a *huge* hit at NAB2005. Seems like anyone who heard couldn't believe it was possible.

It was the same recording...but a car salesmen isn't anywhere close to an engineer. He may have played the wrong cut.

Sometime in the future, I would like to hear a processed demo from an actual engineer.
______________

Get yourself a stereo copy of the eagle's seven bridges road...then pop the hell freezes over dvd in your dts equipped dvd player hooked up to a 5.1 receiver and play the seven bridges road track on there....yeah. theres a difference.

Frank is correct - this was a big hit at NAB. The Surround Session was great. (Was waiting for the fists to fly....)

I've heard some of the new "surround" in automobiles. It is not the same as demonstrated at NAB - Most of what is out there now is pseudo surround, or soemthing else fake.

Go to NAB in September and take in the demo's. You will be pleased.

There's no such thing as "the web", but that buzz word caught on quite effectively :)
______________

You haven't heard a properly mixed surround DVD-Audio disc at 96kHz/24-bit or an SACD (Super Audio CD) in surround then. If you had you would clearly know the difference. I'm not bashing you, I've just seen peoples faces when they gear how cool that is.

My friend, either you have a tin ear - which I know is not the case - or the rep had a p-poor demo disc. Probably something from Silverline.

Go take a copy of the Eagles' "Hotel California" DVD-A into that car and tell me you hear no difference.

Go to the R&R in Cleveland - I've heard that Frank's company will be demo-ing it there. (Correct me if I'm wrong, Frank.)

Sounded awesome at NAB!
