White Sox moving to The Big 89 for 2016-2021

My guess is that since the Cubs are on WBBM which is owned by CBS they could move to the Score 670 which is also owned by CBS.

Rob Feder (longtime and generally well-regarded Chicago radio & TV collumnist) had a piece in the Tribune this morning where he said the move of the Cubs to WSCR is a virtual certainty. Or words to that effect. Feder also says that snagging the Cubs is likely a key component in Cumulus revamping of WLS' lineup, which also includes the removal of Rush Limbaugh, among others.

FWIW, I used to work with a couple of guys who were in Sales and Sales Management at WLS. Both told me WLS was "a south side station". I don't know if that's still true, but if it is (or ever was), that might make it a more natural fit. What is true is that WLS' Tinley Park transmitter site produces a stronger signal in the southern part of the metro than in points north.

Bring back John Rooney!

Even as a Cubs fan, I can't agree more with this.
Farmer is better at play-by-play than he was, but at least when I listen, his inflection and pace rarely change. And in St. Louis, Rooney is second banana to a far less talented PBP man, albeit who is a legend down there.
If I'm not mistaken, the Score was largely to blame for Rooney leaving. He didn't want the pay cut that reportedly was offered.
At least the same thing probably wouldn't happen if the Cubs move to the Score, seeing as they're already in the CBS fold and the radio crew remained intact other than Judd Sirott.

Unless things have changed recently, the Sox radio guys are paid by the team, and have been going back to at least the Harry Caray era, when the Sox were owned by the Allyn brothers. If anyone asked Rooney to take a pay cut, it was Jerry Reinsdorf.

Does anyone see this as an indication of a change in direction at WLS? Perhaps more towards all sports?

Not that there's a shortage or a big need for such a thing, but sports might be more profitable than talk at this point.

In any event it's been a loss for Sox fans as Rooney was/is a great PBP man. His last call for the Sox was a great one, the World Series victory!

That may well be the case. I do remember reading the radio deal with the Score was less than WMVP, so that's probably where I got tied up.
And radioman148, go figure, Rooney called back-to-back World Series winners in different cities. Neat accomplishment.

Official per www.robertfeder.com (yes, there might be a paywall, but the beginning of the story should be readable).
As a Cubs fan, I will not miss the many ads per game trying to drive me to their FM outlet.
Now if WGN would get Bears radio rights back ...

As I asked in Post #9:

Sports is probably the last English-language secular format that's anywhere close to viable for Ancient Modulation.

So WGN has lost both the Cubs and the White Sox. Maybe a new radio station will give the help give the Cubs their first world championship since 1908. And maybe, the Olympic 1500m. will be won by an American in 2016.

Watch out for those flying pigs! :D

Changing radio stations won't do squat for the Flubs. Radio as we know it hadn't even been invented in 1908! Ancient Modulation really was ancient -- using arc modulators -- strictly experimental and didn't work out.

1908 was so long ago that the Ottoman Empire still existed. As did the last Chinese dynasty. Other than LBJ (who was a few months old), none of our Presidents since Ike had been born yet. Cars required turning a crank to start. Few roads were paved. The US had 46 states.

I think Ricketts and Epstein would be better off trying to get better players than thinking a radio station change will help. We're not going to see 1908 again. But I hope they don't try to contact any of their old players that had been in a World Series. The last one, shortstop Lennie Merullo, died May 30 at age 98.

And WGN radio hasn't had the Sox since 1943.

Yep and they brought on the Cubs, but seriously WSCR 670 the Score can't go without a baseball team? WGN Radio went a whole baseball season and even more without a baseball team. Last season the station only had 2 different baseball programming, a fake opening day broadcast and then the Hunt for Blue October. The rest of the time no baseball programming at all. Does it seem right that the Chicago Cubs be on on the former home of the Chicago White Sox, or the Chicago White Sox being on the former home of the Chicago Cubs? And plus I am sure that the Chicago White Sox would want to be on the same radio station as the Chicago Bulls as they both owned by the same man.
