Whither Krenn?

But the man clearly needed guidance in making the transition from DJ to talk show host. Not that there wasn't potential there, but you really appriciated the role Jimmy Krenn had with Paulsen back in the day. There were too many bits that didn't work, too many commentaries that went on too long, not enough emphasis when making a point.

P4L - totally agree. I liked his POV and his show in general (and I'm not a talk radio person) but dang, the song Ramble On is not an instruction.

I think the only problem Paulsen had (besides Krenn ;D) is that he did go way too long with a lot of his commentaries. Otherwise, I think he's brilliant.

The thing with a lot of really talented people is that they have to be in exactly the right situation for everyone to click. In Scott's case it was two things; Krenn as the creative partner, and Gene Romano keeping him under control. Not sure which of the two was more important.

1250 used Scott very poorly IMO. I know that to some degree he wanted to be a more straightforward sports talk host, but a couple of years ago when the Steelers were opening the season on a Thursday night against the Titans, I tune in and he's breaking down the Titans' defensive backfield with Mike Logan. Not credible. He needed to be a local version of Mike Greenberg, running the show, offering opinions as a fan, and being funny.

Often it's not so much about the talent as how the station utilizes that talent.

Parttimer, don't you mean in Krenn's case, it was Scott as the creative partner, and Gene Romano keeping him under control, since Scott invited Jimmy on his show and the idea of having Jimmy on in a more permanent role came about that way.

Either scenario, Romano played a big part of it. And, now that Romano is not a part of the east coast stations (his title is West Coast), he certainly can go to bat for Krenn, but there are others at the helm who are running the station, unfortunately for Krenn or any DVE airstaff member.

Growing old in the radio business is hell ain't it? Suddenly you find yourself surrounded by 20s and 30s somethings and they're calling the shots.

I don't see how this statement pertains to Pittsburgh radio. There are no "main players" in their 20's or 30's.

Yeah, those "kids" like Michael Young, Dennis Lamme, Tony Renda and Gregg Frischling.....LOL.

No, not really. I was comparing Scott's incredibly successful run on DVE to his subsequent projects at 970, back at DVE doing solo nights, 93.7, KDKA and 1250.

Oh, I see what you mean. There was someone else to "bounce something off of"/a partner, as opposed to being solo.

Has anyone heard of the reason for the removal? My guess would be some sort of substance abuse. The fact that neither side will comment and the fact that Jimmie had been on and off the air at random makes me think this is the reason. That also would suggest the reason why he was not outright fired. If management really wanted Krenn to clean up this would be a way of forcing it. Keeping him on the payroll and under contract also helps a competitor from grabbing him up. Or is DVE management really insane and trying to torpedo their #1 show?

Very interesting as this follows a brief period where his hours changed and he started working at 7:30 or so. It also follows a period where, for the first time that I'm aware of, Mark Madden filled in for Prisuta.

Would they move Madden to morning show to take Krenn's place?

I can't picture Madden sharing the spotlight, but it would fit in the CC's apparent plan to turn every station into a 24 hour Steelers/Penguins channel. Apparently CC thinks everyone in Pittsburgh is a mindless Yinzer who can't get enough of the Steelers and sports in general. Not that it would be a major change. Ever since the Superbowl Boob-gate scandal coward almost all FM broadcasters the Morning Show has become a de-facto sports talk show.

Interesting comments.
Last night Chris Mueller went on a rant saying almost the exact same thing, he was fed up and sick of talking about the Steelers every night.
Even used the exact quote "mindless yinzers"

If he said that, he's an idiot. He's on an all-sports station and the Steelers are in the playoffs. What does he expect?

Wow!
His cross over tonight with Andrew Filiponi and Jon Burton was about this message board??
He basically said "..well, what am I supposed to do when stupid yinzers keep calling in about the Steelers?"

How about act like a professional Chris?
Either engage with the caller or politely disagree, but yelling out a loud Sigh, Yawns and Aghh make you sound like childish Madden.
IMO Dunlap is a bad influence on him, they are constantly chatting on twitter about dumb yinzers this and dumb yinzers that.

He has talent but he needs a role model, he needs to be brought up correctly in radio, sadly there are no real Pro's on that station to teach him.

A lot of large corporations now have a written social media policy (I know my employer does). An air personality should no better, anonymous handle or not.
