Whither WVKO...

Perhaps now is the time to buy WVKO from Bernard Ohio. It was a soul music format in the 60s and 70s. Woudn't it be logical to give it bacl to the Columbus african-american community?

Kindred spirit WDAO in Dayton remains on the air airing classic soul and community talk at 1210 AM.

Or simulcast the spanish language format on WVKO-FM for now.
Bernard Ohio I understand is in the buisiness of divesting both WVKO AM & FM since Stop 26 Riverbend went belly-up.

As being a former employee for Bernard Ohio (WRBP-FM 101.9, WGFT-AM 1330, and WASN-AM 1500 in Youngstown) their logic is sell only if the money is high other wise just keep them. Keep in mind the head of the company Christine McCmurray would just rather keep them since she has been in broadcasting for well over 30 years so for her it is her specialty.

My bet it will become a repeater for WVKO-FM since their new thing is Spanish radio and make it a repeater sort of what they did with their sister station WTMP-AM/FM.

If this were to happen, will this be a LMA?? If so, will Gary Richards LMA the station? He used to LMA WVKO-AM four years ago. If not, Bernard Ohio LLC. will program the station Progressive talk.

Maybe Mark of WLOH radio can and is willing to conform this Progressive Talk rumor.

My guess is WVKO-AM will go Spanish and but maybe Progressive Talk will appear on WVKO-AM. I doubt they will go back to Gospel.

I have no clue what format will end up on WVKO and really don't care what happens to 1580.
Until a Station Owner steps forth and gives some sense of permanence to these signals (103.1 and 1580) any format will be considered as temporary. And given the asking prices for these stations, I don't see any takers lining up to buy.

To me, open ended LMA's are a bad idea.
I have used an LMA as a prelude to an actual sale but would never enter into one
without the endgame of actual ownership.

For the Lessee, there is always the looming possibility of your anthill being kicked apart.
Look at the press that recent LMA activity has caused in the Columbus market. Try to conduct business in an environment such as this.

MB makes great points. It's hard to operate under an LMA if there's no difinitive plan to consumate a sale over the long-run. There's little reason to put a lot of effort into developing a great format if the LMA can be terminated. The ROI just isn't there.

I've heard from sources that 1580 will be broadcasting progressive talk once St. Gabriel's time is up.

A very reliable source has confirmed that there are plans in place to get Progressive Talk radio back on in Columbus.
WVKO-AM will be Progressive Talk radio once again. Not sure if this is an LMA or not.

The Ed Schultz show and the Stephanie Miller should be back on WVKO-AM radio soon. Will Progressive Talk radio be successful the third time
around in Columbus? Like they say,'Third time's the charm' and they should have good audio quality for the format this time around on WVKO-AM.

As much as I despise most of the progressive hosts (Stephanie Miller being the exception) not a terrible idea considering we're headed into an election year

Gary's busy enough trying to make WABQ/1460 Painesville solvent. After all, he just took over that station, which had no identity nor any client base in the far-east Cleveland suburb, back in August. His hands are totally full, even if he WANTED to do it.

Bernard is in no mood to program anything, either. Never has been. If someone's going to tap into the progressive talk well again, it's probably a different group of investors/salesmen.

At 6:00 PM WVKO-AM started running a loop of announcements directing listeners to the new home of St Gabriel Radio at
820 AM.

In that case, it's a different group that will LMA WVKO-AM and turn it into a progressive talk radio station again.

As long as it isn't Jeff Santos. Unless you WANT to hear Boston traffic/weather and hear himself talk for six hours of the day.

(Jeff leases air time on WWZN in Boston; he does his own morning and afternoon shows. Recently he's been putting total simulcasts of WWZN on small AM stations spanning from Portland, Maine to Miami, Florida.)

OK, fess up...which "different group" will lead WVKO back into the land of progressive talk?

I wonder if anyone even remotely connected with the old Ohio Majority Radio group - if they're even still around or interested - has money...at least enough to convince Bernard Radio to hand over the keys to an LMA.

Just some guessed on who will LMA WVKO-AM in January.

Owners & publishers of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outlook_Media , Michael Daniels & Christopher Hayes had expressed interest
in doing progressive talk radio on AM 820. They lost interest in buying 820 AM because of the asking price.. They used to have a weekly show on WVKO-AM and did a very good job with it, technically wise. They could pull if off if the asking price to lease WVKO-AM radio is right.

You mean him: http://revolutionboston.com/shows/jeff-santos ?
When Gary Richards first took over over WVKO-AM and turned it into a progressive talk radio station, they were relaying a station from Chicago. So they had Chicago traffic in the mornings for a couple of weeks on WVKO-AM
Wouldn't be too surprised to hear Boston traffic on WVKO-AM if Jeff Santos were to LMA WVKO-AM. :D
Those would be two guesses.

I know that Gary has been having on-going issues with a myriad of technical issues (automation) and is doing the best he can with what he's got.

But you have to realize is that Gary is leasing that radio station from Dale Edwards and he has no plan on buying the station outright. He is just trying to get the progressive view point out there with the election year coming up.

Also keep in most of the technical problems are do to the fact that studio is not in the best shape (actually looks like a war zone) and the only time something get's replaced is when it is no longer working and is unable to be fixed. For example that is why they have a newer transmitter despite everything else being ready to fall apart.

Gary would like to do a huge amount of things with 1460 but he cannot because in the end it is Dale's station and he has to play by Dale's rules which is quite understandable for all involved.

As for Gary doing something with WVKO, not likely. I have heard the Bernard version and the Gary version of the events leading up to ending of the progressive format on WVKO and I can be safe to say Gary will not have a role in whatever WVKO'S new format.

Actually Bernard is in the mood to run and program their properties, Despite being owned by a hedge fund they will operate and program any station they own until they can unload it for a huge profit. If they are stuck with them they will invest in them so they can sell them for more money. Higher ratings = Higher Worth = Higher Selling price = More Profit

Who says you have to use the station your LMAing's automation? What says you can't bring in your own audio source .. feed it to the station owners console/airchain ?
