Whitney Houston coverage...or not!

Interesting observation. Of the most obvious stations to mention the passing of Whitney Houston, the only one I noticed was one without any live and local talent!!! The Lake! They played her music and mentioned it frequently. WDOK/New 102...NOTHING!

Good job DOK!

On my way to an event Saturday night, my phone lit up with updates from facebook, CNN, wtam.com...about Whitney's passing. When I scanned the dial, only WZAK was playing any Whitney music (and airing listener comments). Flipping over the AC side of the dial, 94.1, 98.1, 101.7, 102.1 and 106.5 were all stuck on their 80's or 90's retro nights, with premium choice jocks prattling on about non-topical stories. No mention AT ALL of the passing of one of their core artists in days gone by. NONE.

Later that night, for no apparent reason (unless you already knew the news) the Lake did play a half hour of Whitney music. And, then at 11pm, did relay some one minute updates from the WTAM newsroom.

Bottom line...if you want breaking news...be sure you're online, on your phone, but not near a radio.

Note to celebrities, please try and plan your deaths to be Sunday through Thursday nights or overnights...that way the only LIVE jocks in radio buildings today can be sure to be topical with comments about your passing. Thank you. ;)

Uh - Wrong! All day Sunday - WDOK played Whitney tunes and discuused her death - as a matter of fact WDOK was the 1st station on the air LIVE talking about Whitney and celebrating her life.

Simply not true.

I don't know about the others, however 98.1 and 101.7 had it on the air BEFORE emails from ABC and CNN. I know because i used the technology of Nexgen for iPhone while driving to the studio following our radiothon. (even after signing Oprah's Pledge to not nexgen and drive at the same time)

WENZ's Colby Cole did a music intensive tribute between 5 and 6pm (Monday). The thing that was impressive is that he played a track from her 2009 comeback CD. It's typical to hear the big, big hits, but I do believe that with artists of stature, such as Ms. Houston, it's not only appropriate to play one or two tracks from their most recent release, I believe it will be appreciated by the listeners. However, there was a problem ... stay tuned for that on another thread.

AP broke the news at 7:57 PM Saturday.

A quick check of Mediabase shows

WZAK playing all Whitney starting at 8:21, sister station WENZ started at 8:35. Thumbs up to them.
The Lake played 30 minutes of her at 9:30, as already mentioned.
WQAL or WDOK played none of her songs when the news broke. That doesn't mean no one was on the air relaying the information, though.
The Wave had one of her songs at 9:01

In Akron/Canton
WKDD dropped one of her songs in at 10:49
WHBC-FM played none.
WDJQ dropped one in at 8:04, first of a few that night.
WHOF isn't monitored on Mediabase.

In Youngstown, WMXY was on it by 9:16, first of a few of the night

Heard Whitney all day Sunday on 96.5 KISS FM. At least a couple an hour.

Expecting a radio station to play a bunch of music from a dead singer who pissed away her money and talent with drugs and bad decisions: that's pretty original. I'm sure the family would be happy to know that NE Ohio radio stations added to the royalty change jar.

Hard to relay information on the air when most of the stations are all automated after morning drive even during the week. WTAM had cut ins on the Clear Channel stations because the news person is probably the only live person on the air at those clusters.

BUT...he was referring to WQAL/WDOK (CBS Stations) when he mentioned someone relaying the information. I know that Q104 is live and local on Saturday nights...not sure what DOK is doing now, though, after all of the changes.

Keith, since you're in the know...what sort of info did KDD/HOF have on the air...was the Saturday night DJ/voice tracker/premium choice jock able to comment on the timely new, or did you just relay updates from the newsroom? Is there flexibility to take calls when news like this happens?

Personally, though I was not a big fan of Whitney, or her music, I thought ZAK did a great job taking phone calls and letting the emotion of the moment take over. DOK was just playing away like nothing had happened. Sorry, but a morning show tribute 48 hours after the event doesn't capture the immediacy, or emotion, that radio is capable of doing. That's the problem with recording shows in advance, you sound out of the loop when events overtake you.

I can remember driving back in town during a major fall tornado outbreak on a Sunday night...NOBODY had anything, not even NIR or TAM. It was all syndicated talk shows, or voicetracked weekend shifts. This is where radio misses the boat, nobody's at the board when news breaks out, and in a digital world, when the power's out, no cell phone, Tv or computer. Only radio...when someone's alive and at the controls...can deliver breaking news and information.

WTAM has to break into programming with Severe Weather outbreaks. That is required of them by the FCC. You probably just missed it. Anytime there is a Tornado Warning issues by the NWS it cuts into WTAM programming almost immediately to the second. It may be read by a computer voice from NOAA weather radio but it still does interrupt programming.

No shortage of Whitney Houston funeral coverage today.

Locally, it was shown on Bounce TV (WUAB 43.2).

On cable, it was on MSNBC, CNN, HLN, Fox News, TV One, BET, and E!
