WHJJ-AM Ratings Not Improving

As usual, the raw rating for WHJJ-AM 920 is a small fraction and its cume is getting lower every month. One has to wonder if the only listening audience it has is for morning drive news, weather, traffic and sports. Its the habit at CCM&E to release any DJs at its stations that play mass-marketed recorded material when his or her or their ratings edge down just a little bit. (Often they're replaced by voice-tracked "talent" to save money, which goes NOT to reducing CCM&E's debt but to decorate the CEO's office!)

I have to say that I like the news, weather, traffic and sports format in morning drive. It seems like this template is being replicated throughout the CC radio station clusters. Newsradio 920, Newsradio 560 (WHYN in Springfield, MA), Newsradio 810 & 103.1 (WGY in Albany, N.Y.), etc. The one exception to this format morning drive tweak in New England and New York seems to be CC's WTAG-AM 580 in Worcester. They still bill themselves as News-Talk in their liners. Although they recently added T&W together every 10 minutes on the 8s so maybe they plan to do the same at some point.

IMHO, the move to replace Helen Glover was partially due to this "new" morning drive CC format. Helen's show was talk driven where Ron St. Pierre is doing more of an extension of the news rather than a talk show. Perhaps this was a decision by corporate to give these smaller markets a "News Radio" station without the expense of being all-news 24/7. Although it would be nice if they at least had one local person in each city's newsroom rather than feeding all of the news from the CC hub.
