If WHJJ is moving back to local talk programs, bravo!
Unfortunately for them, so much damage done, that I believe it's starting all over again. All the equity of the past was lost with move to Air America.

On the plus side for WHJJ:

Losing Air America
WPRO loses Kass (whatever you think of him, he has name recognition)
WPRO loses Red Sox after this season (WEEI FM)

On the plus side for WPRO

Heritage calls
Vastly superior news department (augmented by Metro news)
PD David Bernstein is a seasoned veteran who "gets it"
WHJJ management doesn't have a clue

I agree with alot of what you've said ...

Still makes me laugh that you think Metro is the end all be all when it comes to news in Providence though.

And I think WHJJ now officially has a bigger news department than WPRO.
 
Metro augments PRO...both have excellent market veterans. Habberman, Johnson, Klampkin from PRO, Carpilio at Metro.

HJJ is not in the ball game.

Bigger news department? Numbers don't compensate for inexperience/incompetence.
Please...loyalty is one thing...being dilusional is another matter.

You may be right about that as well. I don't really have a reason to be loyal -- but I admire the way HJJ is at least willing to take risks and try something new. It's interesting to see what might come next. And when it comes to news, all I'm saying is that it looks like they're at least making an effort. I assume they dropped Metro because of a money issue, and they're trying to at least trying to do what they can to augment it.

I did not miss the point.

The point is - it will take WHJJ a long time to regain what it has lost since the introduction of Air America.

Metro brings a lot of resources to those stations which use it. Not just Providence news

But if noone is listening to WHJJ, it doesnt matter how big your news department is! Does it?

Mediafan analyzed the strengths of WHJJ-920 and WPRO-630:

And you can probably also add:

* WHJJ will probably gain Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, George Noory, and Glenn Beck during the week, plus Matt Drudge on Sunday nights.

* WPRO loses Rush, Noory, and Drudge.

WHJJ is owned by Clear Channel, and I expect that with WHJJ dumping Air America, talk shows syndicated by Clear Channel-owned Premiere will be yanked from WPRO (those Premiere shows heard on WPRO) and moved over to WHJJ.

But were WPRO to lose Rush on top of the Sox, the station would lose some listeners.

Were WHJJ to get Rush, their overall ratings would double in the span of a single Arbitron book. WPRO's ratings would be hurt, but not terminally.

The end result might be a talk-radio war between a WHJJ whose lineup was revitalized with a couple of new local shows (not to mention Rush Limbaugh) and a WPRO trying to stay on top of talk radio.

Both stations could end up enjoying good ratings.

.I think HJJ is lucky, REALLY LUCKY! Helen Golver is way too classy to lower herself to work for HJJ. HJJ LIED to her last year. 'The next great HJJ Talk Show Host'! Remember? Helen, Kehew, Peter A., and ofcourse Geoff (Good Time) Charlie. All in the contest. This Boards posters reported HJJ was going with Air America 2 weeks after the 'contest' started. HJJ USED those people.
