WHJJ'S HELEN GLOVER

Helen announced on the show today that starting the day after Labor Day her show would expand to three hours and start an hour earlier at 7:00 am. The Wall Street Journal Report starts at 6:00 and ends at 7:00; the 7:00 hour was a repeat of the 6:00 hour, so there's no loss there. Great move on the part of WHJJ and more competition for WPRO's John Depetro.

Smart move.

Gordon Deal does a GREAT job with that WSJ This Morning show, which WSJ Radio had been promoting as a before-your-morning-drive-show-show.

All along, I've thought it'd be a solid morning show, for stations that can't mount a big local production.

The WSJ brand has real value.

It's a good show. Sometimes I leave my radio on all night tuned into WLS Chicago. Occasionally I'll wake up in the 5 AM hour and hear the show. Seems like they give a lot of useful information. I'm a fan.

I think it's a smart move also.. In time, with WHJJs new GM I believe HJJ gets back in the Local game..
Helen has a good and serious show. I bet Depetro would have that also, if he were allowed too that is.

Ryan.

WHJJ is probably under contract to carry its lineup of national talk shows, most of which are among the highest rated in terms of number of listeners, such as Rush, Sean, Glenn, and Mark.

"Under contract" is the polite term.

It's "vertical integration."
Less-gently-stated: "cram-down from corporate."

And why not?
The same company owns the stations and the shows...in this case, the three biggest stars in Talk Radio.

Just imagine if...

...they were available on FM here.

I don't think putting the lineup of usual conservative talkers on 93.3 would dramatically increase the ratings. Yes, the signal would be better than WHJJ's, but there are parts of the Providence metro where 93.3's signal is not perfect (remember that WSNE's stick is in Taunton). Moreover, WPRO, which features a largely local line-up, already has an FM signal, albiet a weak one north of Cranston. These two factors alone would be a stumbling block to success.

I just know the next logical step will be Helen Glover moving to 6-9 AM or even 7-9 AM in order to clear that all-important first hour of Beck, I mean, "The Wall Street Journal?" How important is that radio show, really? Give it to WPRV!

You can only put two gallons of water in a bucket.

You're pointing to an issue that we're encountering elsewhere: Stations would like to encumber more programming than-they-have-time-to-air. There are only 24 hours in a day. You want to make-the-most-of franchises like WSJ's superb morning show and aggressive Beck...AND deny 'em to the competition.

Recently, in another market, we flipped an FM to Talk. Rather than simply simulcasting our AM (an in-place Beck/Limbaugh/Hannity/Savage affiliate), we split-off after our all-news morning drive; and put Dave Ramsey, Clark Howard, Dr. Laura, and Dr. Joy Browne on FM. Less-than-a-month-later, another FM there went talk, and all-that-was-left of available syndicated longform was the dregs. We flipped our FM to Talk DURING the book, and still managed to tie #1 (AM + FM) in that book.

Wanna bet?

Still!

Holland, notice I used the qualifier "dramatically."

Acknowledged!
I DO think the results would be "dramatic."

I take your point about WSNE's transmitter location/coverage.
As a former WSNE PD, I "get" that, alrighty.
Bristol Co. MA is Arbitron "beachfront real estate" often slighted by existing local Talk topics.

They should steal that new show Midday Madness for the towering inferno Wale990.... It would be a great way to lighten up the programming and bring in some of the younger crowd.

I liked Helen better in the jungle...

I think Glen Beck is hilarious! Does he have a show on Comedy Central yet???
