WHJY traffic reports

Tonight around 6:00 p.m., I happened to catch Big Jim's traffic report on WHJY. He reported an accident on I-95 South at the Jefferson Boulevard exit, which had traffic backed up to the Route 10 exit in Cranston. There was NO accidnet at Jefferson Boulevard and there was NO back-ups or slow-downs at all. I was driving through that stretch of I-95 when I heard the traffic report. How old was that information? Was there even a wreck at that location mentioned? I am not trying to criticize Big Jim's efforts at all, but that particular report was totally incorrect. I have complained about CC's traffic reports before, and nothing has changed. They seem to get worse and more incorrect as the days go by. Express Wireless should be ashamed to sponsor traffic reports that aren't right most of the time.

Also, on Friday afternoons, I have yet to hear traffic reports ON ANY STATION IN THE MARKET focusing on Routes 1, 4, 114 and 138 in the southern part of the state. I realize it's been fairly cool weather (up till the past two or three weeks), but come on people, it's summer. Traffic increases heading towards the beaches on Fridays in Rhode Island. Time to get with the program here. It's a mess trying to get on or off Aquidneck Island in the summer on Fridays. You sure wouldn't know it by listening to Providence radio traffic reports.

When I worked for Traffic Net in the mid 90's and my other stations the big thing was no one mentioned 295.Then the attitude change to OH Well! It's sponsered so who cares. From both the station and Traffic Net. So what does that tell you. The Buck rules.

I remember once listening to Tony Petrarca say it was going to snow one day and it never did..that sob had me going, I was bundled up and ready and for what? I tell ya those Cardi boys who sponsored that one should have been pissed off for that BS forecast.

Well good thing for you there wasn't an accident, I would rather have them be wrong and say there is one there and not get stuck as opposed to not reporting one and getting stuck.

An inaccuate forecast before the fact is different than wrong traffic information during or after the fact although to be honest with you I doubt that the accident would have been reported if there wasn't one.I would be more willing to bet it was just old traffic information from earlier in the hour.I think everything on the Charles show is really considered secondary to Charles.

The Troll?

On a related note - what ever happened to the Traffic Troll?

He just kind of dissappeared - I always laughed my ass off when he and Charls got going, now mind you - you never ever got good traffic reports - but at least it was entertaining. . .

In CC's mind why pay Troll to give reports when
you can have someone else give it for a few dollars less.
His reports were entertaining, I do agree there.

I seem to recall the explanation here was that his reports were going on forever although I'm sure he could have been kept on & shortened the bits somewhat.

Re: The Troll?--Was The Best

The Traffic Troll bits were the funniest things to ever air on HJY. I'll never understand how they were permitted to simply wither away and disappear. Whether for money, ego, personality clashes.....what a waste, simply tossing aside the station's most memorable and humorous bit of programming.

I never really caught the humiliation and besides it was the troll character rather than Steve Conti.Frankly as far as length of bits it's difficult to cut things down when you're working with Charles since he keeps roping you back in and interrupting anyway so it wasn't all troll

Well, that's background info the average listener wouldn't know. If so, prhaps the bit was bound to implode, much like a rock band with rival personalties would. But while it was on-air it was FUNNY. If those verbal assaults were personal, rather than aimed at a name such as "Haff Liched Maballzoff," that is a shame.

Long live the Troll.

Well if there was infighting their - the listener couldn't hear it. Charles and the Troll were great together and very entertaining, I remember laughing my ass off whenever he came on the air (even though I got no information concerning traffic).

Big Jim is ok in that spot, and so was Skidmarks (now at WGIR in Manchester, NH), but the Troll was just soo goofy in that role that he just fit - I was sorry to see him go.

Has nothing to do with dollars...Troll is also an engineer and couldn't always be available for the reports.
