WHK change-up

Usually, "The Officer Tatum Show", airs live, on WHK-AM 1420 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Then from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. they air the pre-recorded first hour.
From 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. it's the pre-recorded first hour of "The Dennis Prager Show" which, unfortunately, gets blown out at noon by Charlie Kirk.

Tonight, Tuesday 03/28/2023, they didn't air Officer Tatum's show from 9 until 10 p.m. The first hour of Dennis Prager's show aired, followed by Prager's second hour which already aired at 1 p.m. I wonder if they, accidentally, didn't record Tatum's first hour which runs live nationally live from 6 until 7 p.m.

I noticed that also. I wish Salem/WHK wouldn't slice and dice their shows. I know why they do it but I would prefer they either air the entire show live or air the entire show delayed. The reason being that sometimes the host refers to something that was discussed in the first hour. They can probably drop Jay Sekulow at 6:00 pm. Seems like it is mostly an infomercial for ACLJ.

Finances won't let them drop Jay Sekulow as The Center For Law and Justice pays Salem or Salem-Cleveland for the air time. They also, undoubtedly, also pay for their live shot at noon on 1220 WHKW.

Another WHK change up is this: From 11:45 a.m. until Noon, Bill O'Reilly's update is aired. Up until recently, the first segment is the news, now delivered by Bill's fill-in host. The second segment was Bill's commentary on an issue. The third segment was "Something You Might Not Know"..

NOW THE FINAL TWO SEGMENTS ARE REVERSED. the second segment aired on WHK is "Something You Might Not Know". The third segment is Bill's main commentary of the day.

It's obvious that the show is still sent to member stations with Bill's commentary meant to go second, and the "... Not Know" segment meant to run last, as originally constructed.
CURRENTLY On WHK, after the "...Not Know" segment airs (as the 2nd of the three segments), Bill says his goodbye ("... always looking out for you"). Then after the stop-set, the main commentary airs and ends with Bill saying: "Coming up next, something you might not know". which we've already heard because they are airing he last two segments in the wrong order.

Today, Monday April 3rd, (so we can't say that this is an April Fools Day joke), Bill O'Reilly's 3 segments were aired in the proper order.

Prager still coming on at 9:00 pm. I wonder if Salem/WHK is planning on moving Prager to this time slot and giving his afternoon time slot to Charlie Kirk?

I don't know if that's true for more than this one day. WHK was all screwed Tuesday evening. Around the last 20 minutes, or so, of the 8pm hour, Officer Tatum was airing former President Donald Trump's speech from Florida. Tatum still had to take the regular breaks. One time it sounded like there was two things being broadcast at the same time.

After 9 p.m., instead of Prager or Tatum's show, there was around 8 minutes of news actualities airing with tones in-between each one. Then a "WHK, Cleveland" ID aired followed by dead air. Soon, "The Officer Tatum" show came on. But, at least for me, there was, now, so much cross-talk interference I couldn't understand a thing, so I finally shut the radio off. When checking back a little after 10:30 p.m., Dennis Prager's show was on.

WHK is a disaster - from the horrible audio quality to the spastic programming lineup. It's the ONE station I can be guaranteed where my cat will harass me until I turn the dial.
Tatum's show is especially egregious. The man sounds like he's in a bathroom!

Tatum seems like a smart guy, but I find him a bit annoying at times, especially when he comes back on after a break, he always says "ladies and gentlemen, gentlemen and ladies". I'm not too fond of his diction, but I'll give him a pass on that.

As for Trump's speech, I started listening on WHK, but after a few minutes I decided to try finding it on another station. I did find it on WNIR who aired it without interruption.

You guys probably listen to WHK more than the General Manager and Program director (If they even have one)! It's a hapless operation, a sad stae for a three-letter 100 year old legacy station. In the big markets like New York and LA, the Salem talk stations actually have prime time local programs with well-known area hosts and get a decent audience. But not here. They can't even set up their automation properly, or just don't care. So why should we? For me, I haven't listened to the station since the sports format in the mid-nineties.

And ditto for WHKW 1220. At 50kW, it is a waste of watts IMO. I wish they would sell either 1220 or 1420. But it probably won't happen.

I'm still mad at Robert Conrad for selling 1420 to Salem. Could he not find someone local?

I respectfully disagree. Dennis Prager's show is gold to me. I've learned a lot from him. He has powerful takes on a number of things, and when he criticizes something or someone he, almost always, provides examples. Hugh Hewitt, in morning drive, sounds good, although my listening is, mostly, elsewhere at that time. The local host, Bob Frantz, while being aggressive in the way he speaks, is good, too. I try to listen to the "O'Reilly Update", daily. So ... I definitely do not want Salem to sell WHK.

Franz is entertaining. Mike Gallagher (on the network) is fine. But Dennis Prager's become one of these guys who started believing his own farts, thinking he's some kind of professor instead of just a radio DJ. I remember him from his days at WABC/New York, and he was much more easier to listen to.

I didn't mean to get rid of the WHK programming. IMO it is better than what they air on WHKW. They could move WHK programming to 1220 if they sold 1420.

WHKW’s signal is in theory still 50kW, but it is the weakest 50kW you’ll likely hear. Unlistenable in much of Lorain County and the western suburbs. And it’ll probably continue to deteriorate after the land around the transmitter site is further developed.

Salem may have had a right of first refusal to repurchase 1420 when the July 2001 asset swap was arranged. Plus who would have bought it? What local person would want to own a stand-alone high-band AM with an average signal in a highly consolidated market? Had Craig Karmazin been around sniffing for stations two years earlier, we might be seeing “ESPN Radio 1420” and WKNR goes conservatalk instead.

Yeah, it is possible Conrad could have dropped the standards format and made 1420 a simulcast of 104.9 (as was the original intent) but WRMR became a money pit very quickly and a sale was unavoidable.
