WHK issue

I've noticed that, but normally, it only lasts for a few seconds. I assume it has sometehing to do with the feed from Salem.

Contact the station*. They probably don't know there is an issue.

*Email, Station App or old fashioned phone call. If you can't get a response from a human, contact the sales department. They have a vested interest in folks listening.

Could be a problem with their STL feed which is probably an internet connection.
I can't imagine anyone using a phoneco STL line anymore and microwave or Marti STLs havè ongoing costs an internet connection doesn't. I wonder which stations still use RF STLs vs. online feeds.
Maybe cell phone lines could be used for an STL.

All the way driving to work this morning (about 1/2 hour) and currently in the office (7:50 a.m.), there is dead air on WHK, AM 1420.
In the car, it sounded like the transmitter was on. In other words, no "hash" sound. On the office radio, it sounds like the transmitter may be off, although I just may have not noticed the "hash" sound before because the actual program content is more than loud enough to cover it.

I tuned in at about 8:30 and it was dead air. Tried again at about 8:45 and they were back, but it wasn''t Chris Stigall, it was Bloomberg radio. Not sure what's going on there.

Are you sure about "microwave" costs.?

A properly installed microwave STLs use less electricity than a conventional 100 watt light bulb. Except for lightning, microwave STLs can easily go 10 or more years without any issues except for making sure the cooling fans are clean. If someone can fix a transmitter, that person should be able to trouble shoot a microwave STL easily.

There is no requirement for an Internet connection at a transmitter site unless you are an EAS "input" site and Homeland Security has trailers or containers at your site. That can save you whatever your local ISP charges.

Unless you have a emergency fire, rescue, police, or three letter government agency status, your cell connection can be dropped in high traffic situation.

It was Bloomberg Radio at 9 when I got into my car and turned that radio on (it was left on 1420). Figured what the hey, it's a pleasant surprise - and not often something listenable comes on that frequency (except Saturday evenings).

Have you contacted the station? I will bet a cheap cup of coffee that no one on this site has access to the equipment at this station. Sorry we can help.

BTW old radio trick. If they blow you off, contact the sales department. It's hard enough to sell without the station technology screwing up. The last thing manager wants is the sales department mad.

No. I don't bother contacting them any more. I have contacted the station multiple times over the year for various reasons and have never gotten a response.
See the last part of post #11. For everyone except the sales department it's just a job. For the sales folks it's their paycheck.

But you still need antennas, receivers and most importantly a clear shot to the transmitter site. If all that is already there and you aren't moving the studios, great.
But the internet connection can also give remote access to readings and equipment adjustments from anywhere. As long as the ISP doesn't go down.
And stations who just relay network programmming don't need an STL
BTW, I saw speculation that a reason 19 and 43 didn't build new studios in Independence had to do with not being able to get a clear microwave path. Why, I don't know.

And for most stations, I suspect that if they have ANY salespeople left they're too busy servicing or trying to get people to advertise on the stations and the larger corporations probably just have one person responsible for sales/advertising. Bad enough that iheart wants people to "create their own ads" with this:
Radio and Podcast Advertising.
Sorry, but I have to pay for ads on your station AND you want me to make my own? I can pretty much tell who's using that, I heard a sales pitch so bad that the owner [or whomever the owner picked] was basically unintelligible.

A lot of iheart stations only have people in the office three days a week, so by letting people create and record their own ads it saves them having to open the building/studios on a day when no one’s scheduled to be there, just to have someone make a spot.
