WHKC changes

Based upon what was said below, he was planning to go to a Christian based format
after the 80s format had run it's course.

The article doesn't say that at all.  Since when would anyone do lots of research, talk to NPR, solicit suggestions etc., just to figure out what to air "until we get the engineering worked out"?  Despite some ambiguous wording toward the end of the article (typical newspaper-ese, *perhaps* purposely abetted by Robb), the point is clearly that no permanent format had been chosen.  Whether that was truly the case we'll never know.  But nowhere does the article say the station is slated to go Christian at some point.  If Robb had told Feran that, it would have been been mentioned at the start of the story, not the end.

Hey Jake,

What are the chances that 'CVO would ever broaden the playlist like 'HKC is doing?

Hey C414B ,

I know that we added a "recurent" category to open things up a bit. I am so far removed from the music decissions though...I HAVE heard some stuff on that I have not heard in a while. I could go a few weeks w/o Mark Schutz, Casting Crowns or Third Day.

I think a lot of what is being taught on TV and radio is junk...It is a perverted twisted slant of what the Bible says...I don't disagree that there are some, perhaps even a majority of these "ministries" who are in it to make money simply for the purpose of them doing what they do...I hope not, but even if it were the case, it wouldn't change what I believe is the truth.

That's my point. In a city replete with bad radio, what do they do with a new Class B signal? Bill Swad and his shiny suit protégés hogging up what's supposed to be a signal used for educational and community purposes so they can make more money, buy more tacky gold jewelry and Rolls Royces. (Incidentally, I was talking to someone today who claims he knew both Bill Swad and Leroy Jenkins pretty well. He had nicer things to say about Swad but the bottom line was that he didn't think much of either. Swad is Benny Hinn's sole Board of Directors, by the way. Praaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiise Jeeeeeeesus!)

As has already been pointed out, tithing is a biblical principal. Greed is a human reality and unfortunately there is some overlapping of those two.

I didn't grow up in a church which placed such an emphasis on money. Tithing seems to be emphasized in Protestant churches which are more keen to boil things down to dollars and cents. Of course, our priest doesn't drive a Mercedes, either.

My guess is that you've had some sort of experience with or exposure too "the church." You may have even believed at one time...you may still believe in God but not the church...I am sorry for the pain, disappointment and the anger it has caused you.

I'm praying for you...not because I am on some holy rolling kick, but because it sucks to be so angry. I know, I've been that angry before.

Who said I'm angry? I'm just exposing these people and this entire movement for what it is -- a SHAM!!! And before, any of you WCVO-ers start whining about my position, just ask yourself how your owner was able to buy up all that land he has? The Tree Farm alone makes him an unusually rich person.

Free airwaves ...... all for the glory of GAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWDDDDDDDDDD!

Well, you are certainly entitled to your POV...I think comparing someone like Bill Swad or Robb Case or even myself to the Taliban is a bit of a leap.

I'm not a WCVOer in the least...in fact, I haven't listened to the station for years upon years...perhaps even decades...yes, I am that old!

I think a lot is done in the name of Jesus that is just plain old crap...It still doesn't change who Jesus was and always will be.

I assumed you were mad because I've never ever heard anyone piss and moan so much about something without them being angry...if you are not angry...WOW...find something else to occupy your time. You're wasting a lot of energy complaining about something you will never impact in the least.

As for the 80's format in Columbus. While there are a few people who are passionate about it, it won't pull the equal audience that a religious station will pull...sure it may beat WRFD on the Daytime AM sphere of things but realistically it won't do any better than a 2.0 or a 2.2 in the market simply because the recurrent selections on most HOT AC and AC stations already serve that core 80's demographic.

Star 107.9 as good as it was is better off living large in our memories as a folk favorite...it's current place on the Internet suits it just fine...I can't really say that outside of my short time on this board I've heard of anyone else demanding an 80's station in Columbus.

Star had very good talent on it and it played a lot of my favorite music but like I said, WNCI, WSNY met the same need just as good for an 80's fix...nowdays if an 80's station wants to be included in the mix they would be met by WSNY, WNCI, WBNS FM and whatever 93.3 is...the market for an 80's station just doesn't exist...what Robb was doing with the signal was doing what he always loved...MESSING WITH THE BOG BOYS...this time he had a little muscle with the frequency but he knew that getting into that market would have been too costly for such a small amount of revenue.

People can say what they want about Robb Case and Mark Litton but I can tell you first hand...they never were stupid with how they put their stations, staff or formats together.

So, like religion or not...80's radio was totally temporary on 91.5 FM...look for a large group like Clear Channel or a poorly run company like NABCO try to put something in place.

Just my 2 cents worth

There is a market for 80's music. (Star proved that by cuming an average of 100,000 listeners each week for the majority of its' time on the air...That's about one-third the cume audience of WNCI...not bad for a 6 Kw station with a tower 10 miles north of the I-270 beltway on the north side of town that many people had to almost stand on their heads to receive.)

Just look at the recent numbers of the Brew...which had taken, at least the last time I listened, a more 80's rock approach (which makes sense...that's the music from the 80's that tests the best).

I have continued to see markets in the country where 80's can attract a 6 or 7 share on the right signal, given the right market conditions. But, it's those market conditions that makes the difference. You won't attract that size share if 2 or 3 other competitors split your shares by playing enough 80's music to siphon off your audience.

And, in fairness...when stations like Star came on the air, many of the others that did...did so without doing basic music research. They were throwing darts just as Star was. Companies who did the research and found the best titles to play did markedly better than the ones who didn't.

As far as WHKC goes, I was told 80's was a temporary format. It was even on these boards. So no one should be surprised it went away.

Jake,

Just today on the drive home, I was thinking of calling you up and requesting Amy Grant. Haven't heard her in a long time. Figured you most likely wouldn't have it.

To be honest with you, I'd love to listen more than I do. However, the playlist is WAAAAAY too tight. I feel like I'm hearing the same 100-150 songs day in and day out. I was at a pair of Christian stations (CCM/inspo) for five years in Texas. The playlist was not near as narrow as The River's. There's others that feel the same as I do about hearing the same songs over and over and over.

Any input besides the River Music Team (which I'm on and have voiced this opinion there, too) would be most appreciated. Thanks and God bless!

Amy Grant As Wholesome Homewrecker. Hard not to perceive my mandible. It's right under my nose, after all.
I am not alone in my love of hating her. After all, underneath all the sickening goodness, lies the heart of a homewrecking slut. She may seem happy now, but she has some things to answer for. Vince Gill's wife was devastated when he left her for the Mandible. I hope she gets punched really hard in the Mandible someday. That would be hilarious!!!!!!!! Love to hate the Christian slut.

Hmmm, I detect some elevated blood pressure readings from your general area. Apparently I pushed a button. Sorry, didn't mean to cause excitement, at least not that kind. Alas, we seem to have drifted off the main topic. I'll keep quiet for now. 8)

Hey BOY p,

Does it hurt to be as mad as you are? It gets old listening to you boo hoo hoo all the time. Stop whining and do something constructive
with your life. I have.

Jake

Jake... I have been listening today and noticed some more variety... or atleast I have heard a number of songs that I haven't heard in awhile.

For everyone else... The reason the River runs a tight playlist is actually very simple... the average person doesnt listen to the radio that long or often... so the tighter the playlist the more often or likely you are to hear your favorite song. It really isn't rocket science...

Well, since I've been one to pipe up, I'll take that as directed my way.

I suppose I'm not "the average listener" because I like to listen as much as possible. From having been on the other side of the mic, I understand things like TSL and AQH. I just wish that there was more variety for the long-term listener (like me). There's more out there that's just as good that's not on the Hot 100 right now.

It gets frustrating to listen...only to feel that you're hearing the same songs several times daily.

Or...

I'm listening at the wrong time of day several days in a row. ;D ;D ;D

WHKC has been promoting a new local talk show lately. It called "Columbus Connections" and will have two female hosts and will air at 1:00 PM M-F. They are going to take phone calls from their listeners and the show
is slated to start 'soon'. Not sure how long this promo has been airing but at least WHKC is again trying to connect with it's listeners. I wonder if they are willing to take programming suggestions on this new show?

WHKC is approaching two years on the air and this is the first Columbus Dispatch article on them:
