WHKO

Does Dayton need another country radio station because WHKO is the only choice? In most markets there is usually more than one country station.
 
If Radio One had kept the Dayton market there would be two country stations in the market. There have been previous posts that knocked Kiss Country. These same paper were critical of the talent. There is no doubt Radio One would have made changes with the talent line up. However, Main Line came in and they dumped the format and go with the Click. That was a huge mistake and Main Line under their new CEO could change that and go back to country. I doubt it because Main Line has proven time and again it doesn't understand the market and have let go of some very good people along the way.

K-99 does a lot of things right. However, there is room in the market place for a second country station.
 
K-99.1 is an excellent station. Not the most compelling product I've ever heard, but they do the fundamentals right. It would be a long and expensive fight if someone wanted to battle them head-to-head. I've wondered why they don't flank WHKO with a classic country on what is now the Eagle.

You already have one of the premier Classic Country stations in the nation right in your back yard. No need to reinvent the wheel. Listening right now online to them.
 
I doubt that Main Line will go country even with the new CEO or they would have made the change by now.
Main Line will not spend the bucks on marketing and match up on talent. Look what they have done to the Fly over the years with only one local talent.

I believe Radio One would not have made the move of dumping their country station if they had stayed in the market. Still, there is room in the market for two country stations and you could carve out a very solid revenue stream with the change without going head to head with K-99.,

People first thought that the Rebel in Middletown was a mistake. They did very well in getting a nice audience share and doing very well in revenue.
You make sure your people are on the street everywhere and you will do well There is a no question that a country station in Main Line's Dayton roster would do far better than the Click. Will it happen? No way.

How well did the Rebel do in Dayton? I've wondered why Cox or Cumulus did not try to buy them instead of NKU as that big signal would have been ideal for a Country Legends format or a Hank FM.
 
I am sorry I did not make my point about the Rebel clearer. The Rebel got strong revenue and some numbers out of the greater Cincinnati area. In other words, despite the number of country stations in Cincinnati the Rebel still did well.

The Rebel example indicates that Main Line or someone else could bring in a very strong revenue stream and have an audience large enough to support the buys. You don't take K 99 head on in programming and marketing but you can have a lower rate card than they do and with a good product on the air do better than what Click is doing.
 
Main Line made their first mistake dumping Z-93. Z did very well in the demos and was a well-known station not only in the market, but was one of the longest-running CHRs in the country. I'm sure it sold well. Z got dumped because ML didn't want to pay the talent and wanted to go with a on-the-cheap format with Fly. Fly's first book they did a 5.6 12+ and beat Mix 107.7 5.6-5.5. Ever since then, Fly has never regained that momentum. They've settled into the 2s and 3s(That 2 share they got a couple of books ago is bad for a 40,000 watt signal)and show no signs of getting any higher than that. Then in 2011, they dumped Kiss Country in what was in the long run a bad move. Click sounded good under Scott Sands, and since he's left, the station has suffered and combine that with The X moving back to Alternative, it hasn't been good for Click. I've heard Click doesn't do well sales-wise either. Most likely they're selling it in a combo or throwing in spots for free with purchase of air time for Hot 102.9.
As far as K-99 goes, could Dayton use another Country station? I don't see why anyone would want to do it and go up against the juggernaut that is K99. 94.1 in Cincy doesn't do real good even though it has a monster signal and is consistently beaten by B105 and their flanker 97.3. Classic Country is available on LPFM translators through WBZI and there's also 1340 WIZE, which no one listens to, but the option is there. 95.3 does well demo-wise and most likely, if they did decide to dump The Eagle(Which won't happen), that would be a positive for Fly and they would probably gain the listeners that The Eagle had, or they might just decide to listen to something else altogether. That's my two cents. :)
