WHK'S 100th ANNIVERSARY (Congratulations!)

AM1420 WHK is 100 years old. They are going to have a celebration on Tuesday evening, June 21st, at the Harry Buffalo in North Olmsted. Tickets are on sale at their website. They've been playing little snippets of archived sound this year, including sound from their days as a Business News station, along with quick bits by some of their DJs in the 1960s, and talk radio hosts (Gary Dee) in the 1970s/'80s. I wish they would re-run the produced program that aired during their 85th anniversary or produce a new one, maybe with interviews of former personnel.

I started listening to WHK on a somewhat regular basis in the late 60s when I began following the Browns. WHK was the radio home of the Browns at the time with announcers Gib Shanley and Jim Graner. Home games were not allowed to be televised then, so the only option for those not attending was to listen on the radio.

WHK's weekday lineup at the time was Paul King, "Tall" Ted Hallaman, Frank McHale, Ronnie Barrett (Grin & Barrett) and Norm N. Nite (Nite Train). Evening news reports were done by Tim Taylor and sports reports were done by Gib Shanley and Don Calo. On Monday mornings during the football season, Paul King and Browns QB Bill Nelson hosted a show called Monday Morning Quarterback.

I transitioned away from WHK in the early 70s when all the FM stations started popping up.
