WHKY 1290: Is she going away?

I'm hearing an unconfirmed rumor that WHKY may be signing off, or at least reducing power. Anyone know anything?

G

Why would they do that instead of selling it?

If it's a daytimer, there's a rash of them shutting down and turning in their licenses instead of selling them.
Well maybe not a "rash" of them, but even one seems weird for them to do that. But it happens.
I know that 1080 in St. Pauls, NC did that a year and a half or so ago, and there were a bunch of others right around that time who were doing it. For what reason, I never found out except they couldn't afford to keep the license and so I guess they didn't want anyone else to have it either. :(

As director of Engineering for WHKY I can tell you that the radio station "IS NOT GOING AWAY OR REDUCING POWER".

The station was upgraded from 5KW to 50KW Day in 2004 with the original night power of 1KW.

Also got a note here today saying there was no truth to the rumor...

Are you in Shelby? I'm looking for an old friuend that was Chief Eng in Shelby and formally at WTOB in WS Steve Greene? Is he there?

Big Ape:
I am close to Shelby... we had a radio reunion in 2006, and Steve Greene came to the reunion. He was one of the nicest engineers I ever met. He is retired and doing well. He seemed real excited to be amongst the group again.
He was real kind to me one morning about 4:30am when I called him and woke him up excited when I got to see my first static electricity coming off the tower after a thunderstorm...

Jeff Watts might know how to get to Steve. I'll ask him when I get home.

Thanks Guy's I'd appreciate it..Nope hadn't got up with Scott yet either, actually haven't done anything lately but be lazy...But I'll get back up soon!.. Thanks APE!
