It wouldn't be much of a surprise if AAR is filling the gaps between brokered programming on WHLD, so progressives shouldn't get their hopes up. 1270 WHLD is a crazy-quilt of ethnic and brokered programming, from Hispanic to Middle East, seasoned by 70's gold. Quite schizophrenic.
The
daytime signal is strong. The
nighttime signal is spotty. That's a badass null at 85<font size="1">o</font>.
What's more, it wouldn't be a surprise if AAR is purchasing the time to clear its programming. IMHO, there are only two AAR or AAR-type programs that have any hope in making a dent against WBEN: Randi Rhodes' shrill but entertaining squawk-a-thon and Ed Schultz' reality-based-from-the-working-man show. If nothing else, they offer an alternative to the chickenhawk-tripe-from-highly-paid-middle-aged-white-guys-who-never-served-in-the-military on WBEN.
BTW, the same tripe is very highly rated. WBEN is a good news-talk radio station. It also has no serious, in-band commercial competition. No disrespect to WNED and WBFO. Unless WHLD and AAR are serious about getting a news department (one or two rip 'n readers won't make a difference) and investing in local talent to promote and produce, this battle's already fought and won by WBEN.
