Congratulations to Ray and Alex on what I thought was a good first morning. I tuned in for about a half-hour around 7:30. On the plus side was a newsworthy discussion on the perils of the nation's trade gap. The topic may not be sexy, but unless the deficit is lowered, the expert they talked with warned that prices for everything from gasoline to clothing could rise significantly in coming years. Also, the lack of commercials for the time being is certainly a plus -- more time for content. Of course, that won't pay the bills long-term.
On the minus side is the sound of the station itself. After years of apparent neglect, the WHLD transmitter and signal processing doesn't rate with that of WGR, WBEN and WWKB. I hope something can be done about that.
Here are my thoughts. The crew at WHLD is in this for the right reasons. That's not the case with Entercom and WWKB. Will that be enough to help WHLD win? I certainly hope so. When it comes to WWKB, I have never wanted to see a station fail as much as I do in this case for what Entercom did to Danny and the gang. I was heartened when I heard Leslie Marshall trolling for calls in her last half-hour Friday, and none were coming in. Then, I heard from someone that Wenger took a lot of heat from listeners about the KB change during his occasional "Ask the Program Director" segment on Friday's Sandy Beach show.
I have no doubt that Ray and Alex will do better than KB in the morning because it's LOCAL! It would be great if they could challenge WBEN. I can't listen to WBEN for more than a couple of minutes in the morning because of the ungodly amount of commercials. Still, WBEN's large news staff brings a credibility to the station that I'm sure WHLD will find hard to duplicate. This morning, WHLD was running Metro News. That's a good start. But more of a news presence will be needed.
But on the whole, WHLD will have my listenership, not WWKB. In fact, my preset was changed this morning from 1520 to 1270. Good luck, Ray and the gang. And a pox on KB!
