WHLD TALK

Good move by Cumulus to go from sports to talk, although I do not agree with syndication, it should be local. However, another station on AM is good. It helps all AM stations. That is a Buffalo thing. In some other markets AM is barely existing. I give Cumulus credit for at least trying to do something with their AM’s. Talk and Country are the 2 biggest revenue formats in radio. It goes way beyond ratings. It is the psychology of loyalty of the listeners of these formats.

Just another 'clearance market' for Cumulus syndication. WBEN owns the Con-Q-Talk niche with local gassers while for the most part, WHLD will be syndicated. 1270 has only a fair daytime signal, at night it's marginal at best. In most areas of the metro it disappears at night. WHLD did squat with sports against WGR; the same will likely apply to talk competing with WBEN. This one falls under the "If a tree falls in a forest and nobody's there, does it make a sound" adage.

What is interesting is they’ve locked up these up and coming conservative talkers. If WBEN wanted to save on live programming for more syndication, their conservative syndicated talk options would be limited.

Agree with "Rusty Bridges". Westwood One is apparently using these little parasite AMs to bolster numbers for their Westwood One talk format. If it happens to annoy a big-time local talker, so much the better. It's likely more about saying "Our talkers are on more stations nationwide than any others." There's a pretty good chance that there are more commercial avails in Con talk than sports.

Shortly after insurrectionists on January 6, 2021 stormed and broke into the US Capitol, Cumulus corporate handed down a mandate, as reported in stories filed January 11, 2021 by the Associated Press and numerous national papers:

"Cumulus Media, which employs some of the most popular right-leaning talk-radio hosts in the United States, has told its on-air personalities to stop suggesting that the election was stolen from President Trump — or else face termination."

As it relates to the 'syndicated stars' as opposed to the local Cumulus yackers, will the corporate mandate remain in play, or will Cumulus look the other way? Guessing the latter.

Just tuned in to hear how the station sounded. I couldn’t wait to turn it off. I waded through Chris Plante’s diatribe to hear how WHLD was positioning itself as well as what network they were using at the top of the hour for news. It turns out it‘s FOX News. I’ve always found the FOX top of the hour radio broadcasts to be fair, unlike the biased coverage I used to hear from USA Radio News on WEBR, before their recent switch to NBC. I did laugh at WHLD’s liner — “Where Buffalo comes to talk.” Really? Shouldn’t you have some local content to make that claim? Plante is just awful — nothing but name calling, personal attacks and weak arguments. Another Rush wannabe, tossing red meat to right wingers. I won’t be listening!

Driving around north Amherst and south Niagara County today, the station is barely listenable. I'm talking technically, not content. Such a poor signal, especially in Niagara County when the station is licensed to Niagara Falls. WHAM Rochester comes in better. I can't see this station doing anything except providing clearance for the network spots.

I like conservative talk but that doesn’t matter to most of you here. I also like HD radio again hated by most. I wish that they would turn their HD back on and put this on an HD2 for 103.3, 104.1, or 96.9 they could also put 98.9 on HD. None of Cumulus stations in Buffalo have HD on but everyone else in town does. Not a fan of streaming because I like to listen to different stations as I drive. AM at night is horrible.

Politics on the radio, as it's presented in this country is a silly waste of time lacking in substance. Face it, it's all for entertainment value. If we had a real discussion on the radio of the issues it would be a ratings flop, no one would listen. So what we have is radio that panders and sells instead of serves and informs. I don't blame radio, it's the system it has to exist in where stockholders demand a return on their investment. Short term gain at long term expense.

And any damage to the nation by allowing the constant spread of misinformation that undermines our institutions and democracy should just be considered the cost of doing business---or collateral damage. Ain't that grand.

But yet the 'news' media gets away with spreading misinformation frequently. When caught they simply issue a rarely seen or read retraction but by then the damage is done.

It depends which "news media" you're talking about. Some conservative outlets NEVER retract their false stories, and never back down from false news, even when multiple people in their own orbit tell them the story is false, or as AG Barr said, "BS." That's why we still have so-called news channels reporting that an election was stolen, even though there is no proof.

I'm not referring to talk radio of any flavor. That's meant as entertainment. I'm referring to those in the media who are considered to be 'news'. There are many knee jerk stories reported in one form or another that include half truths or even opinion in the guise of news by virtue of where or who reports them. Our Republic (which the USA is, we are NOT a democracy) suffers when the supposed purveyors of facts aren't reporting complete facts.
