Central Mass. WHLL has flipped to Nueva 98.1

Audacy flipped Hall Of Fame Country WHLL/W251CT/WMAS-HD2 to a Spanish Tropical format today around 2:45 PM. Angry because WHLL was a good station that i enjoyed listening to over Kix 100.9, plus we don't need another Spanish station (Bomba 104.5/97.1 reach Springfield well)

This is gonna flop ratings wise, i just know it. We don't need another Spanish station clogging the dial. Springfield should get a full time CHR station. both Kiss and KC serve Connecticut primarily, and rarely mention Western Mass.

Is this really tropical? Tropical is salsa and merengue if the audience base is Domincan, Cuban and Boricua. More likely it is CHR with reggaeton and trap and artists like Bad Bunny and Daddy Yankee.

It does not look like it has an adequate signal in Springfield for in-home and work listening, and it certainly does not cover the tastes of all listeners.

Spanish language stations in smaller markets don't sell purely on ratings. They sell based on being the only traditional media way to reach Spanish dominant Hispanics.

Why? Do you know that there are just as many formats (or more) in Spanish as in English and that a number of them are viable in your area of the U.S?

That's considered a format in some difficulty right now because many CHRs are playing more gold to make up for a dearth of new true hits. It's also the format most vulnerable to streaming by 18-34's.

“Escucha Más Música en Nueva 98.1 - jÉxitos
Tropicales Top 40 para Springfield, Massachusetts!”
Besides the odd Spanish on the page, the link brings up a station with reggaetón music which is, loosely, the rhythmic CHR of Latin America.

The first few songs I heard in the last 15 minutes are good selections. One bachata, sort of like adding a slow song in a club as a change of pace.

Added note: the between song liners are horribly produced I have heard dead air between the end of a song and the start of the liner, and either a smash into the song's vocal or a dead air pause after. This is a classic ready, fire, aim of putting a new format on before it was ready.

I don't get that they say "tropicales" and then they use an English "trade expression" of "Top 40". "Top 40" is not a known term in Latin America... including Puerto Rico. Sounds like they kinda' put this together on the fly.

Thanks for reporting the change and following up with the link!

ive not heard any horribly produced imaging or any gaps of dead air in the 30 mintues ive been streaming it

If 98.1 is programmed locally it will be a good thing. Everything on BOMBA 104.5 originates in Bloomfield, Connecticut.

According to @lanceventa

"Candy Cintron, Brand Manager of “El Zol 107.9” WLZL Bowie MD/Washington DC, adds those duties for WHLL as well."

So doesn't sound like it.

It's old fashioned "scream in your ear" overproduced imaging like what station in Puerto Rico did back in the 70's.
