Who actually benefits from HD radio?

greetings. ya know, I couldn't quite figure who out who benefits from HD when I was on the air and I still can't figure it out...now that I've been a full-time "listener" for one year of the past 26.....

is it the HD alliance? auto manufactures? the HD radio manufacturers? sales people?

seriously...if anyone can bring some HD clarity to this issue....minus the standard HD "talking points"

please share the Value of HD to anyone...other than my 2 engineer friends.

Who benefits? Radio listeners. It gives them more options and much better quality.

Yeah, in NYC for example some stations uses their HD2 channel to broadcast the station's previous format that for one reason or another ended up being replaced. For example 103.5 uses HD2 to broadcast country that they used to have when they were WYNY, 101.1 used to use HD2 to broadcast CBS FM (oldies) when Jack took over, but now since CBS FM is back on the main channel, Jack went to HD2. Back when Free FM was on 92.3, they were planning to bring the online KRock2 to the HD2 channel, but in the end, like CBS FM, K-Rock came back to the main channel after the new head of CBS Radio basically cleaned up the mess the previous guy left. In Philly 106.1 uses HD2 to broadcast a Jazz format that used to be on 106.1 before it was changed to My 106.1.

Many stations also use HD2 to broadcast niche formats that wouldn't be able to survive financially if the format was on a standalone station.

Ok question tho.... I just bought a 2008 car. No HD radio, but it does have Sirius. If someone wants to listen to HD Radio they have to buy additional equipment. So with XM and Sirius what would really, really make someone buy an HD receiver over satellite?

Did They Give You A Free Sirius Subscription?

If So You Have All You Need Right There!

I don't See How HD Radio Can Be Any Better Than That.

Today it was announced (saw in USA Today today) that on all Ford cars model year 2008 with the top line sound system that HD radio was included.. First major car manufacturer to offer as a standard add on. see USA Today article.
