Who are the best and worst NBA announcers?

Since it's into that time of year...The best: on the local level, a guy who isn't doing any at the moment (which is a crying shame) Kevin Calabro - ex of the Supersonics. Fortunately, he pops up on the national level from time to time. Solid, colorful, great pipes - everything you want in a call. An up and comer is Spero Dedes, radio for the Lakers. Doing a good job growing into the role and showing great skills - not even 30 years old. On the flip side: As good as Spero is, how can the same team have such a sucky TV guy? Joel Meyers is pathetic and comes across as if he's God's gift to sportscasting. I'm sure it still chaps his ass that he missed calling Kobe's 81 point game because of a football conflict. There's just nothing there - better to turn off the TV audio and listen to the radio call.

Mark Boyle who does the Indiana Pacers is very good. The only problem with him is he can't resist constantly telling you how good he is and how much smarter he is than anyone else. Trust me, after listening to him for the last several years if you don't believe he's great just ask him. If you don't ask him just wait a few minutes, he will be sure to let you know. Our color man Bobby Leonard is fantastic he's been with the Pacers since the begining (1967). He is insightful and down to earth and a perfect compliment to Boyles pompous personality.

good topic. keeping it to radio, i agree that dedes (lakers) is superb. unfortunately, he'll be gone soon to the national level - he's doing ncaa and nfl broadcasts already. calabro is good also. i like him on espn games but i think he works better with a local nba team. marv is marv - an absolute one of a kind talent. (i watch nets games on broadband just to hear him and fratello).

one other local name is tim roye with the warriors. he's been buried with a crappy team for over a decade but does a solid job - nothing fancy and too much of a homer.

nationally, i hope calabro gets the espn main playoff gig later this year.

Well most of those NBA announcers are homers, can't blame them.

I'll homer out for our Thunder guy Matt Pinto. I really love listening to games when Jim Durham and Dr. Jack Ramsay call them on ESPN.

I really am not a huge fan of Gus Johnson. I cringe when he does college games.

Marv Albert best announcer of anything, anywhere, anytime.

Marv was always the best when he did Knicks Games on Radio in the late 60s through the 70s, He always let you know the score and always had a good flow about him, Back then Mostly Home games were on Radio as He did Knicks and Rangers games,
The worst!!! Ever Johny Most of the Celtics. (Just awful homer. also whoever did Baltimore Bullets games around 1970 to 72 was awful)

I really like Mark Boyle as well. I don't find him all that pompous.

I'm sure it still chaps his ass that he missed calling Kobe's 81 point game because of a football conflict.

I've always wondered why the Laker TV announcer even chose to take other jobs? To me, that job is important enough that the TV guy should be exclusive. If Joel was upset about missing Kobe's 81, he shouldn't have been freelancing.
